About the company:

Over millions of years, silicate rock weathering has regulated Earth’s climate. By crushing silicate rocks and spreading them on agricultural soils - an approach called Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) - we can accelerate Earth’s natural process into a solution capable of addressing the urgency of climate change.

Existing agricultural and silicate rock sites - namely 5,000+ global silicate rock quarries surrounded by agricultural land - have the potential to remove billions of tonnes of CO2 with enhanced rock weathering. Despite this potential, ERW hasn’t scaled given the extraordinary scientific, technological, and operational challenges involved. Terradot, founded out of the Stanford ecosystem, is addressing these challenges by advancing the science, building the technology, and assembling the coalition needed to make this potential a reality.

We’ve started in Brazil – one of the world’s most optimal locations for ERW thanks to its tropical soils, strength in agriculture, and clean electricity grid. There, we are building the most ambitious ERW hub to date. This hub will drive the necessary breakthroughs in ERW science, ensuring every tonne of carbon dioxide removed is measured and tracked with certainty.

These insights will power digital tools for the optimization and verification of carbon removal projects, enabling the replicability of these hubs globally If successful, this approach will uniquely and rapidly catalyze global-scale carbon removal, enabling the transformation of [300] such quarries in Brazil and [5,000+] global quarries into carbon removal hubs.

Terradot has assembled a growing team of leading scientists and engineers with decades of published research (over 100,000 citations on ERW) and hands-on expertise in related fields, providing unmatched experience to drive advancements in ERW.

Location: Remote (50% traveling). 100 km radius of São Paulo (SP), Dourados (MS), Maringá (PR), or Assis (SP).

Languages: Portuguese and English required.

We are looking for a GIS Scientist with deep experience in agricultural applications to join our team and play a key role in scaling our impact. As a GIS Scientist, you will be responsible for leading spatial data analysis, designing geospatial workflows, and supporting our field and science teams with high-quality GIS deliverables. This role requires a deep understanding of geospatial analysis applied to agricultural landscapes, including data collection, remote sensing, and spatial modeling. You will work closely with scientists, operations teams, and engineers to ensure our MRV platform effectively integrates spatial data to generate accurate and reliable carbon assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead geospatial projects, including farmer data collection and counterfactual scenario modeling.

  • Design and implement soil, crop and water sampling plans and integrate them into our platform.

  • Perform QA/QC on farm management records, spatial data, and field polygon integrity within the platform.

  • Retrieve, process, and analyze weather station data to support carbon quantification methodologies.

  • Retrieve and manage soil databases for specific applications, including sample tracking and verification.

  • Provide GIS support to field scientists and operations teams for data collection and spatial analysis.

  • Develop spreading maps and application maps to optimize field operations.

  • Design and implement experimental soil sampling plans and pilot studies.

  • Conduct clustering analyses and develop coding pipelines for soil data retrieval from open source databases and NDVI analysis for experimental design.

  • Maintain and update geospatial databases, perform queries, and ensure data integrity.

  • Support GIS integrations with our technology platform, improving spatial functionalities and user accessibility.

Background and Requirements:

  • Education: PhD in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Agricultural Sciences, Soil Science, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Agronomy, Crop/Soil modeling or a related field. Candidates with a strong GIS and geospatial analysis background in an agricultural setting and equivalent industry experience will also be considered.

  • Strong Background in GIS & Agriculture: 5+ years of industry experience in applying GIS methodologies in an agricultural setting, preferably in soil science, carbon markets, agronomy, or environmental science.

  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Felt), APIs, remote sensing, and spatial modeling techniques.

  • Data Analysis & Coding: Experience with Python or SQL for geospatial data analysis, including working with large agricultural datasets.

  • Sampling & Experiment Design: Understanding of field sampling frameworks, field data collection, and experimental design for soil science and agronomic applications.

  • Project Leadership: Ability to manage projects, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and deliver high-quality spatial data outputs.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong QA/QC skills to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and compliance with MRV protocols.

  • Communication & Collaboration: Comfortable working in an interdisciplinary and multicultural team and translating complex geospatial analyses into actionable insights.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working with agricultural carbon markets, soil sampling procedures at plot and field levels, MRV methodologies, or regenerative agriculture practices.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based geospatial tools and databases.

  • Knowledge of machine learning applications in geospatial analysis.

Personal Attributes:

  • Strategic thinker who can balance short-term needs with long-term vision.

  • Highly collaborative, with strong leadership skills and a hands-on approach to problem-solving.

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • A positive, action-oriented mindset with a focus on outcomes.

What does success look like in this role?

Meaningful contributions to the advancement of our internal technical stack and methodology development, and providing support to the SciOps team to execute on our ambitions.

About Terradot:

Our mission is to stabilize Earth’s climate by transforming nature’s most powerful permanent carbon removal process into a global climate solution. By advancing science, building technology, and assembling a global coalition, we are catalyzing a global initiative to scale Enhanced Rock Weathering within the next decade, starting in Brazil.

Founded out of the Stanford University ecosystem, Terradot is led by the world’s leading experts to advance the science and technology of ERW. Our unique structure bridges industry, academia, and government and allows our team to contribute with speed & scale. We have raised $58.2M in total funding from John Doerr, Sheryl Sandberg & Tom Bernthal, George Roberts, Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, Google, Cisco and Venture Funds, Floodgate, Kleiner Perkins, Acre Venture Partners, Gigascale Capital, Valor Capital, Ponderosa Ventures and others. We have sold ~300,000 tons in offtakes from leading CDR buyers like Frontier and Google.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
