About the company:

Electric Hydrogen (EH2) is a deep decarbonization company pioneering low-cost, high-efficiency, fossil-free hydrogen systems. Focusing on industrial applications of hydrogen in steel, ammonia and freight transport, our goal is to help eliminate more than 30% of global GHG emissions from hard-to-electrify industries.

Electric Hydrogen’s mission is to create an abundant and decarbonized material future. Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer who will work on Electric Hydrogen's Prototype Plant – our first large-scale electrolysis system – located in San Carlos, CA. You will develop novel design iterations for the electrolyzer balance of plant using your knowledge of fluid and gas processing systems.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop mechanical design concepts for process skids and piping assemblies. Use good engineering judgement to balance safety and reliability with the need to rapidly iterate on the design of the prototype.
  • Perform engineering analysis to support your designs, including calculations for flow rate and pressure drop, heat transfer, and static structural loading.
  • Select process equipment for fluid systems including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, compressors. Size piping and select appropriate fittings for piping assemblies.
  • Model parts and assemblies in 3D parametric CAD software. Produce drawings for the fabrication of pipe assemblies, weldments, and custom machined parts.
  • Generate bills of materials for equipment and piping.
  • Collaborate with chemical and electrical engineers on interdisciplinary efforts such as hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMEA).
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to commission new designs and troubleshoot issues identified by plant operators.

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer working in a relevant industry, such as chemical / petrochemical, oil and gas, wastewater treatment, power generation, etc.
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering documents such as process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). Ability to generate fluid system designs from upstream documents with little supervision.
  • Familiarity with process equipment common in liquid and gas handling, heat exchange, and compression. Working knowledge of common methods for pipe joining.
  • High proficiency and speed in 3D and 2D CAD software packages such as SolidWorks.
  • Ability to produce designs compliant with relevant codes and standards, including NFPA, NEC, and Class 1 Division 2 hazardous location.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with prototype systems in an environment requiring rapid design and deployment.
  • Experience working with hydrogen fueling and/or fuel cells.
  • Experience using computational tools including finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for analysis of structural loading, heat transfer, and fluid flow.
  • Experience sizing equipment and pipe assemblies for multiphase flow.
  • Prior experience working in a startup environment.

Employee Benefits

Electric Hydrogen offers the best benefits possible. We pay 100% of all employees' health/dental/vision/disability insurance premiums and 100% of the premium for their immediate family. This is for all of our full-time employees. We feel strongly that our team should not have to worry about having quality healthcare. We also offer a generous 401k match and unlimited time-off.

COVID-19 vaccination required for all employees and contingent workers, unless a reasonable accommodation is approved. All prospective hires will be expected to provide proof of vaccination to attend an onsite interview or at their first day of employment.
