About the company:

Electric Hydrogen (EH2) is a deep decarbonization company pioneering low-cost, high-efficiency, fossil-free hydrogen systems. Focusing on industrial applications of hydrogen in steel, ammonia and freight transport, our goal is to help eliminate more than 30% of global GHG emissions from hard-to-electrify industries.

Electric Hydrogen’s mission is to create an abundant and decarbonized material future. Our outstanding people are our most important asset and will allow us to deliver hydrogen from renewable electrolysis for heavy industry, at prices below fossil fuels.

We are looking for a Prototype Plant Controls Engineer who will work onElectric Hydrogen's Prototype Plant – our first large-scale electrolysis system – located in San Carlos, CA.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build process control systems on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for automation of our prototype water electrolysis plant.
  • Develop feedback control schemes from high-level documents such as P&IDs. Program, debug, test, and iterate as the layout and hardware of the prototype evolves over time.
  • Create a safe environment for prototyping. Implement robust warnings and alarms to ensure the plant operates within its design envelope and responds to excursions appropriately.
  • Build HMIs for engineers and plant operators to use in their day-to-day testing.
  • Document your code through block diagrams and flow charts. Communicate cross-functionally with engineers and scientists to help validate their prototype designs.
  • Support software developers and data scientists by maintaining well organized tags lists on the historian. Correct issues affecting signal quality and data integrity.
  • Assist with instrument selection including sensors for temperature, pressure, flow, and gas composition. Integrate with control hardware over industrial network protocols.

The role will require knowledge of multiple disciplines (electrical, mechanical, chemical) and a desire to develop controls for a rapidly evolving, prototype system. A successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing safety critical industrial automation solutions for chemical processing, oil & gas, wastewater, or similar industry.
  • Ability to develop process controls using standard programming languages such as Ladder, Sequential Function Chart, Structured Text and Function Block Diagram.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and networks such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, HART, etc.
  • Working knowledge of common industrial process equipment such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, motors, compressors, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience developing and maintaining control systems using Rockwell Automation suite of tools: Studio 5000 / Logix Designer, FactoryTalk, PlantPAx DCS.
  • Experience developing and maintaining data historian systems using AVEVA/OSIsoft tools: PI System, Asset Framework, PI Vision
  • Experience automating tests and data analysis tasks in a scripting environment using high-level programming languages such as Python.
  • Previous experience working in a startup environment.
