We are searching for a Materials Engineer to join our Materials Design Team, focusing on materials selection and materials degradation in order to enable long lifetime industrial water electrolyzers. In this role, you will select materials to meet the specifications of the aggressive environments within waters electrolyzers, develop ex situ tests to inform materials selection, determine material lifetime, perform root cause failure analysis to enable peak performance of Electric Hydrogen’s core technology.
You will be based in Natick, MA and report to the Director of Cell Development.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure reliability of water electrolyzers by owning the materials selection and materials challenges across different scales, from cell to stack to plant.
•Develop, and inform, through experiment technical requirements of materials
•Develop an understanding of the failure modes and link them to environmental conditions
•Develop and maintain a list of compatible materials for different environments through first principles experiments
•Perform corrosion and degradation experiments per ASTM standards
•Design corrosion, degradation experiments that reflect real environments
•Develop mitigation strategies or select cost optimized mitigating materials to ensure long lifetime of the electrolyzer plant
•Work with suppliers to develop processes, design of experiments and generate coupons for analysis
•Work with a cross-functional team, at various scales in order to maintain materials excellence
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field such as Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or other
• 3+ years experience in metallurgy, materials science or engineering, materials failure analysis, corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement, degradation of polymers, mitigation of corrosion failure modes, materials selection, metallography, corrosion testing, root cause analysis and failure mode identification.
•3+ years of Experience with standard analytical tools (SEM, XRF, FTIR, TGA, DSC, DMA etc)
•3+ years of Experience with mechanical testing
•3+ years of Experience with electrochemical testing
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of electrochemical devices a plus
• Knowledge of sources of stainless steel, welding, brazing, pickling, passivation processes, codes and standards is a plus
• Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles and systems including pumps, pneumatics, fans, flow meters, air handling systems, industrial chilled water, heating, process piping, and heat transfer is a plus
• Exhibits commitment to a safe, reliable, and efficient work environment
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
[Natick, MA Zone] Materials Engineer (P3): $101,000-$134,000 per year
Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job-related skills, as well as relevant education or training and experience.
