About the company:

Chestnut Carbon is a U.S.-based nature-based carbon removal company that develops and manages afforestation (ARR) and improved forest management (IFM) carbon projects across the United States. The company works with expert foresters, carbon scientists, and land management specialists to restore marginal lands to native forestland and support the long-term conservation of privately owned forests. Its projects generate high-quality carbon credits while delivering co-benefits including biodiversity, water quality improvements, wildlife habitat, and support for rural communities and family forest owners. Chestnut Carbon's mission is to provide scalable, long-term nature-based carbon solutions that help corporations reduce their carbon footprints while restoring and enhancing forest ecosystems. The company distinguishes itself by owning and managing the land it restores, ensuring project permanence, and by working exclusively with at-risk, privately owned U.S. forests for its IFM program. It serves as a long-term partner for both corporate buyers seeking carbon credits and landowners seeking access to the voluntary carbon market. The company has developed proprietary technology including the Chestnut Land Explorer platform and patented carbon measurement devices to deliver accurate and verifiable carbon solutions. Notable milestones include raising $250 million in funding, being recognized among America's top GreenTech companies for two consecutive years, and becoming the first U.S. IFM project verified for biodiversity conservation impacts with the Forest Stewardship Council.

Who We Are:

Chestnut Carbon is a leading developer of nature-based carbon removal solutions, focused on generating high-quality, U.S.-based forest carbon projects that are additional, verifiable, and designed to accelerate the path to net zero. Founded in 2022 with the support of energy-focused alternative asset manager Kimmeridge, Chestnut uses a proprietary, technology-enabled approach to restore and conserve forestland—maximizing ecological value and long-term climate impact.

To date, Chestnut has planted over 17 million trees across 30,000 acres and enrolled more than 175,000 acres of privately owned forestland in its improved forest management program. Our projects deliver measurable environmental benefits, including enhanced air and water quality, biodiversity, and wildlife habitat.

Chestnut was named one of TIME Magazine’s Top GreenTech Companies of 2025 and received both the FSC President’s Award and the distinction of being the first U.S. project verified through FSC’s Verified Impact program for Biodiversity Conservation.

Chestnut was founded and backed by Kimmeridge, a US-based private equity firm with offices in New York and Denver.
