Engineering Manager, Data Platform

About the company:
KoBold Metals® is a rapidly growing Silicon Valley start-up using AI to enable the transition to electrification and help solve climate change. We are backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a16z, Bond Capital, Sam Altman, T Rowe Price, and other premier VCs.
Our team includes the best of the industry in exploration geoscience, data science, software engineering, and business personnel. KoBold’s world-renowned geoscientists have made nearly 20 discoveries. They work on joint teams with outstanding data scientists, who have PhDs in physics, math, materials science, and geophysics. And our technology backbone has been built from scratch by our team of software engineers who are alumni of top Silicon Valley tech companies.
We are hiring a Director of Engineering to help accelerate our mission.
About the position
In this role, you will lead the team that builds the software backbone that underlies the company’s entire approach to mineral exploration. You will work closely with leaders in data science and geoscience to understand how the software engineering team can most effectively help the company make discoveries, develop a technology roadmap to achieve these objectives. You will grow the team, integrate new team members, and be responsible for the professional development of everyone on the engineering team. You will run the day-to-day working cadence, and have oversight over or direct responsibility for technical matters such as overall IT security and infrastructure and vendor choices and costs. Ultimately, your role is to enable the engineering team to help build data tools to solve challenging scientific problems and to enable the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
Responsibilities
The Engineering Manager will be responsible for:
Setting objectives and direction:
  • Deeply understand the exploration objectives of the company through reading and dialogue with data science and geoscience leaders
  • With input from team members and company leaders, formulate the engineering components of our technology development roadmap for each upcoming quarter and half-year
Technical leadership:
  • Lead the week-to-week working cadence, ensure that we are setting clear goals and timelines, and align our planning/tracking frameworks with our plans
  • Provide guidance to team members on triage and near-term prioritization; handle and prioritize ad hoc requests
  • Provide input to and be a sounding board for engineering team members on technical challenges and design proposals, and facilitate technical discussions that advance our collective understanding of the problem and develop solutions
  • Contribute to and review code across a range of components of our tech stack to gain familiarity with the code, collaborate with engineering colleagues, and help where needed
Team-building:
  • Create a staff/resource plan for the upcoming year indicating both the capacity and the capabilities required to deliver against the engineering roadmap
  • Oversee, guide, and participate in screening and interviewing candidates
  • Revise and maintain our tools and framework for assessing engineering candidates
  • Identify sources of great candidates and ways to improve KoBold’s profile among groups we wish to recruit from, e.g., outreach to groups and organizations, open-source sponsorships, or posts on a company blog or Medium site
  • Create and implement an effective onboarding experience for new engineering team members
Professional development:
  • Understand the professional development objectives of all team members and create opportunities for each person to work on problems that advance their objectives
  • Have periodic individual check-ins and provide timely and actionable feedback
  • Conduct thoughtful, and strengths-based performance reviews
  • Design or maintain an engineering job ladder and clear descriptions for performance at each job level
Security:
  • Periodically convene internal security reviews and source external security audits
  • Plan and prioritize measures to improve security
  • Maintain company-wide IT security policy and take measures to probe and ensure compliance
Infrastructure and vendor management:
  • Keep watch on the costs and usage of AWS and other external software providers, forecast costs, and identify and prioritize cost-saving opportunities
  • Identify and source specialist expertise where needed and identify and evaluate opportunities to use third-party tools
  • Facilitate or oversee consideration of any material new vendor or third-party relationship and manage ongoing relationships with vendors and contractors
Qualifications
A great Director of Engineering candidate will have:
  • A deep technical skillset and significant experience working as both an engineer and a manager
  • Successfully grown a team several-fold starting from less than 10 engineers
  • Delivered complex products, including those involving multiple business functions
  • Had direct responsibility for two or more of the following areas or direct reports with these profiles: data engineering, back-end engineering, machine learning engineering, data science, dev ops
A great Director of Engineering candidate will be:
  • Highly intellectually curious and eager to learn in depth about KoBold’s technology and mineral exploration and geoscience more generally
  • Eager to work on challenging, ambiguous scientific problems
  • Versatile, resource, and comfortable with a fast-changing work environment
  • Strongly intuitive and empathetic, able to read people effectively and understand what’s important to them, and able to attract great talent and to build long-term relationships
An advanced degree in the physical sciences or engineering is helpful but not required.
