The Supplier Development Engineer role is to partner with both internal and external stakeholder (design engineering, quality, procurement, operations and suppliers) to best understand needs of the business/project and establish a capable supply base to support those needs. This will include both identifying, on-boarding and developing new suppliers as well as working with incumbent partners that are struggling to achieve rate, hit certain quality requirements and provide consistent product.

This team member will:

  • Become an integral part of the overall assigned system/commodity teams.  Identify needs, develop gaps from what is in place today vs what will be needed in future and work cross-functionally to develop action plans to close the gaps
  • Take active part in internal and external technical and design reviews (PDR; CDR; FDR) and provide insight & recommendations to make the designs more robust
  • Develop a list of suppliers, both by region and by capabilities, and work with procurement and engineering to establish a development plan catered to each supplier, if necessary
  • Identify opportunities to remove/reduce complexity in designs for more efficient manufacturing process and establish built-in quality standards to address high-impact and repeating non-conformances
  • Actively participate and lead, as appropriate, the development and execution of inspection plans with standard measurement tools and review/approval inspection reports, PFMEA process capabilities studies and applicable elements of the APQP
  • Establish acceptance criteria for various electronic part types (controllers, sensors, power systems, wire harnessing, power supplies, electro-mechanical systems etc.)
  • Develop manufacturing instructions to document quality critical characteristics including in-process inspection & testing
  • Coach and collaborate with a cross-functional team of manufacturing, design, and operations engineers to establish a high-quality manufacturing line
  • Be an active member of cost reduction projects including planning, coordinating with stakeholders, estimating completion, and project updates
  • Establish preferred suppliers by category. Create and implement related management programs to develop, improve and manage KPIs of the supply base
  • Skillfully balance the price, delivery, quality, service, and value tradeoffs and rationalize the supply base 
  • Adhere to all supply chain policies, procedures, guidelines and instructions including those regarding the procurement of materials, intellectual property, and export compliance. 
  • Negotiate internally and externally at high levels or with persons of influence
  • Support ISO 9001:2015 implementation
  • Physically be on-site at vendors for extended periods of time on an as needed basis
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Solid understanding of electronics design, manufacturing, testing and packaging requirements
  • Perform advanced technical activities such as Supplier Assessments & Audits, including Quality Management System (e.g., ISO 9001, AS 9100, IATF 16949)
  • Familiarity with AS6081 testing requirements for counterfeit materials
  • Utilize specialized quality tools such PPAP (PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA) capacity analysis and Lean Six Sigma initiatives
  • Ability to design, establish and implement supplier quality improvement processes and procedures.
  • Implementation and management of ERP or other procurement tools
  • Ability to teach and educate others with little background on the subject

  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Master's Degree in an Engineering discipline
  • Six Sigma Certification (Yellow, Green or Black)
  • Experience in people management
  • Experience in a start-up or high growth environment
  • Experience in Automotive or Aerospace
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call.
