Position Senior Research Associate
Location: Berkeley, CA
We are seeking a detailed oriented microbiology Senior Research Associate to join our growing Early Fermentation sub-team within Fermentation and Formulation (F&F) team. As a part of this team you will be instrumental in testing both pre-commercial and early discovery strains. Testing will include growth studies in differing growth conditions and formulations to help identify optimal conditions for our microbes that improve long-term stability. You will conduct experiments in collaboration with F&F scientists to measure and assess microbial growth characteristics and determine their robustness in various conditions.
Responsibilities:
Screen growth media for pre-commercial and early discovery strains
Understand the microbiology involved in robust cell propagation from cell bank to field studies
Work with team to assess growth and robustness of cells in various media types and culturing conditions to correlate short term microbial behavior to long term stability
Produce reliable quantitative data on growth metrics and performance indicators
Document detailed observations
Work with LIMS to develop workflows, recording data and observations, transferring data files to LIMS, contributing to data analysis in collaboration with and reporting to Scientist level
Run small scale (15-250 ml) fermenters
Required Qualifications and Experience:
BS in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, biology or fermentation and 5+ years laboratory experience or equivalent related experience
Expertise in sterile technique, bacterial growth characteristics, viability plating, and microbial identification
Attention to detail
Excellent observation, documentation and problem-solving skills
Data organization and reporting with Microsoft Excel, JMP, SpotFire, Python, or R
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced industry research lab environment
Great communication - ability to understand the needs of others and clearly explain ideas
Knowledge of bacterial metabolism
Experience running small scale fermentation systems
Desired Skills and Experience:
Experience with 3 or more of the following:
High throughput and plate-based culturing techniques
Laboratory automation
Microscopy
Plate-based bioreactors (e.g. Biolector)
Biolog
PCR/analyzing sanger sequencing results
qPCR
