About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

Company Background

What if there was a limitless, safe, clean, low-cost energy source, providing much needed global energy security?  What if that energy source could also help reduce climate change?  We believe that’s fusion energy.  Tokamak Energy is a leading global commercial fusion energy company based near Oxford, UK.  We are taking established science and building on it by pioneering the use of spherical tokamaks in conjunction with high temperature superconducting magnets.

The company, founded in 2009 as a spin-off from the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, currently employs a growing team of over 180 people with talent from the UK and around the world including expert scientific, engineering, industrial and commercial capabilities.  The company has more than 55 families of patent applications and has raised over £100m of private investment.

Once realised, fusion energy will be a key enabler for meeting world energy requirements and climate policy goals.  Come and be a part of a dynamic and innovative team who are striving to provide a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology to support with fusion and non-fusion projects.
  • Working with external collaborators as required to develop HTS magnet designs and HTS magnet technology.
  • Taking ownership of magnet development activities ensuring the work is focussed on the project objectives.
  • Taking ownership of the magnet prototype development and the associated test plans.  Working with the wider team to ensure the instrumentation and test facilities will provide the required test data.
  • Developing multiphysics magnet simulation tools to aid both design and understanding of test data.
  • Taking responsibility for the safety and quality of the prototype testing.
  • Working with the wider team to review collected data during experiments to diagnose magnet prototype performance and steer the test campaign accordingly to ensure successful magnet testing.
  • Developing and specifying data analysis tools and software packages as required.
  • Interpreting test results and producing clear written reports.
  • Liaising with international research facilities and wire suppliers to assist in the procurement and characterisation of very large HTS tape quantities for upcoming magnets.
  • Ensure magnet development projects stay focussed to deliver against the defined SMART objectives of the project.
  • Liaise with project and program managers as requested.
  • Offering guidance to less experienced magnet engineers and technicians.
  • Support commercialisation of the company’s HTS magnet technology.
  • Generate and document intellectual property.
