About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

As part of the Plant Prediction & Simulation department, the Engineering analyst will be a member of the wider Science, Engineering and Technology group providing analytical and product development resource to the wider business towards, tokamak design and operation, business and investor insights, and Fusion Pilot Plant systems integration.

There are many systems involved in development of a fusion power plant that will require fluid dynamics analysis, ranging from, ensuring a sufficient mass-flow rate of coolant to keep a system to within operating condition, or maximising delta-T of a coolant to efficiently extract thermal energy for the purposes of usable work, to the motion of liquid metal in a variable magnetic field.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide Metallic and non-metallic fluid dynamics expertise to the designs of fusion systems, focusing on novel liquid metal tokamak components (such as blankets and divertors) including cooling, heat extraction, exhaust and breeding solutions.
  • Assess thermal loads in systems such as breeding blankets, divertors, first walls, limiters, shielding and, vacuum vessel.
  • Develop and implement computational methods and models for novel fluid dynamic solutions.
  • Collaborate in the assessment and qualification of designed systems using advanced flow analysis techniques.
  • Collaborate with team members to analyse and interpret simulation results, identify trends, and evaluate performance metrics.
  • Contribute to the documentation of modelling methodologies, results, and findings for internal reports, publications, and patent applications. Report results to external parties at technical meetings and conferences.
  • Conduct literature reviews and gather data on novel techniques for improving pumping and heat flux handling performance in solids and liquid metals.

Requirements

  • PhD or Degree in a relevant physics or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of theoretical and computational fluid mechanics.
  • Experience performing, checking, and validating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Magneto-Hydrodynamics (MHD) models.
  • Experience modelling of non-isothermal and/or multiphase flows, modelling of flows with undergoing phase-transformations.
  • Experience using commercial (ANSYS, COMSOL) and open source (OpenFOAM, Salome-Meca) simulation packages
  • Some knowledge of programming languages such as C++, FORTRAN, Python, or MATLAB
  • Some knowledge of parallel computations (MPI and/or GPU).
  • Experience in analysis and research
  • Some experience in producing system design descriptions and system interface documentation

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays and 3 festive days to be used between Christmas and the New Year)
  • Company pension scheme
  • Eligible for company share option scheme
  • Company bonus scheme, discretionary, dependant on performance
  • A range of financial benefits including death in service and critical illness cover
  • Cycle to work scheme
