About the Position:
The Sales Engineering & Energy Markets Manager position is within Fluence’s Digital business unit, formed following Fluence’s acquisition of San Francisco-based start-up Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS). Fluence’s
Mosaic™ software is an algorithmic BESS optimization and auto-bidding system that uses machine learning techniques, advanced price forecasting, and operations research principles to algorithmically bid & operate energy storage assets within wholesale electricity markets. Following the successful commercialization of the Mosaic software in the US and Australian wholesale electricity markets, Fluence has localized its Mosaic software for entry into the Japanese markets.
This position is within the Digital business unit’s Energy Markets team, which operates at the nexus of business development, product development, and operations. The Sales Engineering & Energy Markets Manager will play a central role in helping to commercialize Fluence’s Mosaic software and service offering for the Japanese market, by supporting Fluence’s internal team and Fluence’s potential customers with data-driven analysis, electricity market expertise, and a solutions-oriented attitude. The role will also support the smooth handover and transition to live operations for new customers.
The Sales Engineering & Energy Markets Manager will join Fluence’s growing local team in Japan, will report to the APAC Director of Energy Markets, and will work closely alongside and in support of the Japan-based Business Development (Sales) team. This position will also collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders in the Product Management, Data Science, Marketing, and Account Management teams withing the Digital business unit.
Key Responsibilities:
The Sales Engineering & Energy Markets Manager will support the commercialization of the Mosaic software in Japan by:
Supporting the sales process:
• Helping to develop sales collateral and proof points that communicate Mosaic’s value proposition to potential customers
• Helping to give demos of the Mosaic software, explaining how it works, and communicating its value proposition
• Helping customers understand how Mosaic integrates into their existing systems
Supporting the product development team:
• Act as an internal subject matter expert on electricity market operations, supporting colleagues in the Product Management and Data Science teams with subject matter expertise around Japanese market rules, market systems, and bidding and dispatch procedures
• Through the sales process, identify unmet needs and customer pain points, and communicate them to the Fluence Product Management and Data Science teams, assisting those teams with the scoping of new Mosaic modules and functionalities
Supporting the onboarding of new customers and smooth handover to operations teams:
• Ensure new customers are introduced and effectively handed over to operational / delivery team members at the conclusion of the sales process. Ensure key contextual details, customer objectives, and customer expectations are captured and communicated.
• In the early days of operations, help provide new customers with guidance on the techniques and approaches used to trade and operate BESS in the Japanese wholesale markets using the Mosaic software, helping them achieve their objectives and get the most out of the software.
This position will be based in Japan and will require fluency in the Japanese language and at least moderate proficiency in English, a willingness to wear multiple hats in a start-up environment, and the desire to help shape the commercialization of an innovative new software product that supports Japan’s energy transition. Occasional business travel will be required.
What will our ideal candidate bring to Fluence?
• Several years of experience working in the Japanese wholesale electricity markets, ideally with experience at an aggregator, generator, or BESS operator, and familarity with physical electricity trading
• A genuine interest in BESS and electricity markets, the role they play in the power system, and how they interface with the Japanese wholesale markets.
• Comfort handling large datasets, and distilling and communicating actionable analytical insights to diverse stakeholders
• Business proficiency in both English and Japanese
• A problem-solving attitude, willingness to wear multiple hats, ability to work dynamically with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders, and the enthusiasm to thrive while working in the start-up phase of a business with high growth potential.
• A desire to contribute to the growth of the BESS industry in Japan, to help the industry innovate, and to advance the role BESS will play in supporting Japan’s energy transition.
