About the company:

The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization, is developing and scaling technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Our aim is to put ourselves out of business once the oceans are clean.

The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop and scale technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. Once the ocean plastic pollution has been extracted and recycled, it needs to be further processed and tested for use in new applications.

Through extensive R&D, we have shown that we can transform the ocean plastic we collect into something of value. We now need to develop a portfolio of materials with harvested ocean plastic while staying ahead of the curve when it comes to available recycling technologies.

The Catch Management team is responsible for what happens with the collected waste after being extracted from the ocean. The goal is to repurpose ocean plastic into new products, helping to fund the continued cleanup, and giving supporters a tangible opportunity to join our mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

"The plastic pollution that we take out of the ocean is not easy to recycle, but it can be done. We are looking for a bright and curious material development manager with thorough knowledge on plastics, who can help give the ocean plastic catch a second life."

Stella van den Berg, Catch Management Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute a material development R&D plan to create a portfolio of materials based on the ocean plastic waste
  • Research (emerging) recycling technologies to reduce waste and improve the quality of the recycled material

  • Contract partners to produce and test the materials, including masterbatch and additive suppliers
  • Create and maintain a material database with technical and safety datasheets
  • Work with the Quality, Safety & Health manager to adhere to quality, safety, and health standards, and to ensure adherence to the chain-of-custody model to verify the ocean plastic origin
  • Deliver material expertise to river sorting & recycling projects
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in a relevant field: Chemical (product) Engineering, Chemistry, Materials or Polymer Science/technology/engineering
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in plastic R&D or processing

  • Relevant experience in working with external partners

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • You are a self-starter with an analytical and data-driven approach to problem-solving

  • Eye for detail
  • Strong communication skills
  • You are curious and willing to travel abroad for site visits
  • And above all: an intrinsic motivation to work on our ambitious and meaningful mission
Please mention the potential start date in your application.
