OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Sr Director of Continuous Improvement and Manufacturing Support, this full-time packaging engineering leadership role works in close cross-functional collaboration with other packaging engineers and the Marketing, Innovation/R&D, Operations and Commercialization teams to bring new Beyond Meat products and packaging to market. This position will have 3 direct reports.

The ideal candidate will have experience in food package development, applying robust science, data capture and project management to execute designs. They will be responsible for design, testing, and implementation of new packaging structures integral to Beyond Meat’s Product Development process and will have a proven track record of food packaging equipment design, selection, installation and qualification/commissioning.

TASKS, DUTIES, & GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Successfully lead the packaging engineering team in engineering, development, qualification testing, and implementation of new packaging designs, manufacturing processes, and equipment as part of product and packaging introductions which meet project objectives and launch timelines.

Drive for results and faces challenges head-on. Quickly senses what will help or hinder accomplishing a goal and ability to adjust for roadblocks, measuring performance against goals.

Organizes, leads, and conducts packaging engineering design, development, process and equipment trials, specification, commissioning, and verification of food packaging processes and equipment to meet customer and consumer expectations, costs and BYND quality standards.

Accountable for food packaging solutions which deliver packaged-product integrity, sustainability, and user experience that delight the consumer while also achieving cost-effective designs and processes for manufacturability and high-volume production.

Builds strong and effective collaboration between Beyond Meat’s Marketing, Innovation, Commercialization, and Operations teams in package development, new product introduction (NPI) and business continuity efforts.

Establishes engineering specifications and providing packaging oversight for equipment and associated tooling selection, procurement, installation, and commissioning.

Serves as the environmental sustainability ambassador to enhance the vision and ensure pack formats are consistent with the brand image.

Strategize with cross functional partners to identify and execute packaging quality improvements and cost reduction initiatives to meet organizational costs of good objectives; partner with sourcing to lead collaboration sessions with suppliers to identify design to value opportunities.

Draft and implement Packaging Standard Operating Procedures

Manage and provide career development for 3 packaging engineering direct reports

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

Leads 3 Packaging or Senior Packaging Engineers

Provide mentorship and training to functional team members

Accountable for developing talent through on-going performance feedback and career management coaching

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Technical Skills, and/or Previous Experience

BS or MS degree in Packaging Engineering or equivalent

Must have 8+ years of food packaging or consumer goods experience, which includes 5+ years of relevant management experience leading food packaging engineering in NPI process development and production scale-up.

An experienced, decisive leader and manager with a proven track record of delivering on mission critical company objectives and commitments. Able to effectively lead cross-functionally at all levels in the organization, with relevant management, technical, operational, and team building experience.

Successful food packaging development and commercial scale-up skills with a track record of planning, leading, and executing projects and deliverables clearly, as well as holding engineering and project teams fully engaged, enabled and accountable for achieving results.

Expertise with predictive modeling tools such as 3D rapid prototyping, AutoCAD Inventor or SolidWorks, primary/secondary/tertiary/pallet/truck loading (i.e. TOPS), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and/or others are a plus.

Proven experience with capital expenditure projects and associated capital appropriations processes with total cost above $2M.

Ability to independently manage multiple projects at one time and meet strict deadlines in a highly demanding and dynamic environment

Strong verbal, presentation, and written communication skills

Strong command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The ability to work closely with Senior Leadership by communicating ongoing progress updates

The ability to work in a team environment and be self-directed

This position may require the ability to work rotating shifts or beyond business hours

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Willingness and ability to travel (40% travel), both domestically and internationally

Position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time in a cold room environment

Position located in a mix of typical laboratory, pilot lab, and office environments, and requires a tolerance for high worker traffic, close quarters, noise, odors, dust, and varying room temperatures and lighting
