For ambitious business and technology professionals seeking to have a meaningful impact on climate change and the health of humanity and our planet, Heliogen offers the opportunity to address global challenges through collaboration with a world-class, dynamic team of forward-thinking leaders.

About this role:

Heliogen is seeking a talented and experienced Manager, Heliostat Mechanical Design to lead the development and optimization of heliostat mechanical systems. The successful candidate will play a crucial leadership role in overseeing the design, improvement, and scaling of the mechanical components of Heliogen's heliostat systems, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and suitability for high-volume manufacturing. Additionally, this role will involve creating and setting development and strategic goals for both the company and individual contributors on the team.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage a team of mechanical design engineers, providing strategic guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise in all aspects of heliostat mechanical design.
  • Drive the design and development of mechanical components and subsystems for heliostats, including mirror, pivot and actuation mechanisms, and ground anchoring.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively, ensuring timely completion of design milestones and deliverables.
  • Utilize Jira or other Agile tools to plan and track the team’s work on a regular cadence.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including simulation, manufacturing and supply chain, quality, and test, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with other subsystems.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and contribute to the selection of appropriate materials, manufacturing processes, and fabrication techniques for heliostat mechanical components.
  • Oversee the creation of detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and specifications, adhering to industry standards and best practices.  Help establish design guidelines, standards, and documentation.
  • Oversee and guide analysis and simulation of mechanical systems to optimize performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with procurement and supply chain teams to identify and evaluate potential vendors and suppliers, ensuring timely and cost-efficient sourcing of mechanical components for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Build development plans for the team, including setting goals, conducting performance evaluations, and fostering professional development opportunities.
  • Create strategic vision for both the individual contributors and company relating to heliostat design and manufacturing.

What's essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other technical discipline (or equivalent practical work experience).
  • Demonstrated engineering leadership and project management skills, with the ability to effectively lead and inspire a team, manage priorities, and deliver results within tight deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, structural analysis, kinematics, and dynamics.
  • Experience in developing teams, providing performance management, coaching, and fostering professional growth.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Passion for renewable energy, sustainability, and driving positive environmental impact through innovative engineering solutions.

Desirable:

  • Proven leadership experience in the renewable energy sector and/or in high volume manufacturing scenarios.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX) and experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS).
  • Experience in designing mechanical components for high-volume manufacturing, considering cost optimization, scalability, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with material selection, manufacturing processes, and fabrication techniques relevant to mechanical systems for high-volume production.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to mechanical design and safety (e.g., ASME, ISO).
