About the company:

Floodbase (formerly known as Cloud to Street) is the recognized authority on using satellites and AI to track floods anywhere on earth. Founded by two climate experts with initial funding from Google, the team comes from NASA, Facebook, Google, Willis Towers Watson, and Oscar Insurance. Our platform has been used by 18 countries to fill critical information gaps for disaster planning and response, actively monitoring over 122 million people. The technology is now enabling insurers to expand protection to billions of uninsured assets and people through partnerships with Munich Re and Willis Towers Watson. We recently raised an oversubscribed and large seed round from top investors including Collaborative Fund, Lowercarbon, Addition Capital and Mercy Corps Ventures.

ABOUT FLOODBASE

Floodbase is changing the way businesses and communities adapt to increasing risk of climate change impacts from flooding. Last year, we launched a solution enabling re/insurers and public sector organizations to profitably design, underwrite, and monitor parametric flood insurance products, extending coverage to historically uninsurable locations and risks. Built on nearly a decade of industry-leading and peer-reviewed science, our proprietary solution continuously monitors flooding globally. Floodbase is backed by investors like Lowercarbon Capital, Collaborative Fund, and Floating Point, and trusted by NASA, The UN, Google, FEMA, and more.

We are seeking an experienced Geospatial Data Engineer to join our technology team, working on processing large volumes of remotely sensed and geospatial data. You will partner with a team of engineers and machine learning scientists to drive adoption of new geospatial technologies and standards in the company. Your work will touch all elements of our product, from the processing of new data sources for our cutting edge models, to identifying efficiency gains to run our data at scale in our in-cloud infrastructure..  The role is remote with core hours in EST or hybrid based in Brooklyn, NY.

Here’s what you will do:

  • Build ETL workflows to ingest and process geospatial data, especially remotely sensed products from public and private providers
  • Collaborate with science team to implement and review production code for new products and workflows
  • Work to improve performance and scalability of workflows, identifying where processes can be updated

Who You Are

  1. Curious, driven individual, who is interested in working on innovative, impactful problems
  2. 2+ years of experience in writing code working with remote sensing and geospatial data
  3. Python coding proficiency in the open source geospatial ecosystem (rasterio/gdal, shapely, geopandas, xarray/rioxarray, dask)
  4. Experience with different geospatial formats and best practices (GeoTIFF, COG, Zarr, NetCDF, GeoJSON)
  5. Experience with STAC metadata standards and best practices
  6. Working experience in cloud computing platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure)
  7. Familiarity with git source control and code documentation standards and practice
  8. Past experience with machine learning is not essential, but an ideal candidate will have some experience
  9. Experience with data science and analysis not essential, but a nice to have
