Backend Software Engineering Manager

The Role

We are seeking a Backend Software Engineering Manager to help lead our growing cloud software engineering team. In this role, you will guide the software team through design and development of our current and future products. 

You are comfortable taking action in an environment where complete information is unavailable and can enable your team to deliver well-architected products that maintain high quality. Experience coordinating many moving parts to meet tight deadlines and have contingency plans ready when priorities shift is a must-have. To be successful in the position, you will have had previous experience managing teams developing complex, mission-critical software, working cross-functionally to ship highly scalable and resilient services in a production environment.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Define the technical roadmap of the software products and empower the team to deliver those plans on time, on budget and with high quality.
• Move in lockstep with Product and Hardware Engineering to execute a cohesive product vision. 
• Identify opportunities to improve processes, tools, product performance, and technology enhancements.
• Develop a hiring plan to grow the software team as needs require.
• Fluently speak to how the software roadmap fits into Span’s overall business strategy.
• Provide coaching to your engineering leaders and teams.
• Pitch in with architecture and code reviews when appropriate.
• Be a SPAN product advocate.

About You

We are seeking an engineering leader who has:

• 7+ years of experience building technical software products; with at least 3 of those years as a manager of an engineering team.
• A history of scaling tech teams and products with a passion for mentoring your direct reports in both technical achievement and career growth.
• Relentlessly strive to push towards best practices and team goals while being flexible in a fast paced startup environment.
• Experience working in an environment with multiple programming languages and frameworks (our backend systems use a combination of Node.js w/TypeScript, and Python)
• Previous hands-on experience with some of the following: AWS services including Lambda, API Gateway, Fargate, ElasticSearch/OpenSearch, IoT Core, RDS, SNS/SQS,  and development of internal and external APIs with REST and GraphQL
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field

Bonus Points

• Experience working at companies developing hardware IoT products and services
• Experience building products for both B2B and B2C users
• Experience leading teams in a small but rapidly growing startup environment
• Experience in cleantech products and services
• Experience partnering with in-house hardware and manufacturing teams
