About the company:

Revolutionising urban air mobility and electrifying air travel

Why work with us?

We at Vertical Aerospace are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, creating technology to achieve sustainable air travel like never before. Vertical comprises a world-class team of leaders, experts, engineers who're all striving towards the same goal, to make air travel personal, on-demand, and carbon free. This is your chance to be a part of this extraordinary team.

Vertical is one the world’s leading eVTOL businesses, and a pioneer of this ground-breaking new segment, which marks the beginning of sustainable aviation.

Founded in 2016, Vertical uniquely combines the best of the aerospace, Formula 1 and automotive industries and has become one of only seven companies globally to have successfully flown multiple full-scale eVTOL prototypes.  The VX4, is a world-leading fully composite tilt-rotor winged eVTOL that will carry one pilot and four passengers or cargo.  VX4 is in plan to be  certified in late 2024, placing the business in the top two companies globally with a commercially viable aircraft capable of spanning intra and intercity passenger and cargo eVTOL markets.

We are looking for an Advanced Battery Abuse Modelling Engineer who will:

Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly. Our mission is to make air travel personal, on-demand and carbon-free.
We are seeking an Advance Battery Abuse Modelling Engineer that thrives on working on new and novel engineering concepts. You will join a team of highly motivated people that are passionate about creating robust designs using the latest technology to find optimised results for our new generation of battery packs to support our aircraft program.
We are a company that values inclusion and diversity and offer benefits such as flexible working, parental and maternity leave.
The Advance Battery Abuse Modelling Engineer will be mainly responsible for delivering models capable of modelling typical cell abuse cases and thermal propagation This requires working with universities and research partners, developing methodologies, using various software, working under uncertainty as this is a new field constantly developing, and creating test standards.

The responsibilities and duties of the Advanced Battery Abuse Modelling Engineer will be as follows:

  •  Lead the development of abuse modelling methodologies
  • Identify the correct types of models that should be used to answer the engineering questions, and shape the fundamental approach to battery modelling within the company
  • Work with Test Team to develop a model led test plan to optimize testing strategy
  • Critically review and propose test and modelling activities to deliver a certified battery
  • Work closely with System Team supporting activities such as DFMEA
  • Lead the battery abuse modelling activities, to deliver the design Virtual Verification at key program gateways
  • Demonstrate that the design meets the requirements through simulation, analysis, and validation
  • Develop models based on customer requirements, creating tests for each requirement, and develop a method to estimate the model quality rating from the model assumptions, type and validation activities
  • Design and develop sensitivity studies and DOEs to support and optimize the design of all the systems inside the battery boundary.
  • Work closely with the mechanical design team to assess functionality and performance of the design
  • Calculate the safety related KPIs for concept iteration
  • Modelling and analysis of battery safety strategy under key abuse cases, using combinations of both 1D and 3D mechanical, fluid and thermal analysis tools
  • Follow industry codes and standards
  • Develop techniques to improve the accuracy of models
  • Support test engineers in designing tests to validate the models and improve model accuracy
  • Develop modelling guidelines, documentation and standards,
  • Create technical reports, summarizing the results of simulation and analysis activities and suggest improvements to the design, test and modelling approach

  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics
  •  Strong knowledge of CFD and FEM
  • Experience with commercial CFD software, such as Ansys Fluent, StarCCM or similar.
  • Knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape.
  • Knowledge or experience modelling typical cell abuse cases, and good understanding of the physical phenomena relevant to these events
  • Sensing and data acquisition/ Instrumentation knowledge
  • Understanding of how system level requirements for performance, safety, and durability drive model requirements
  • Knowledge and experience applying Systems Engineering principles
  • Ability to decompose complex processes into understandable components
  • Ability to work through problems, starting with first principles calculations and working through to detailed simulation or test.
  • Ability to manage their own time and coordinate with others to prioritise and deliver long-term goals with limited oversight.
