What to Expect

At Vertical Aerospace, we’re on a mission to revolutionise air travel by delivering our first electric aircraft into service by 2028. A key step on this journey is building our own battery capability in-house and that’s where you come in.

As an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (Laser Welding), you’ll take the lead on developing and qualifying welding processes for our next-generation battery packs. You’ll work at the forefront of aerospace and green technology, helping us turn prototypes into certified, production-ready systems for the VX4.

What You’ll Do

• Lead manufacturing engineering for laser welding processes on aluminium and copper components in EV battery packs.

• Own weld requirements across the battery pack, ensuring compliance with certification and performance standards.

• Create and refine welding parameters, processes, and test methods to qualify welds for aerospace use.

• Collaborate with design teams to optimise components for welding and improve manufacturability.

• Define and execute welding test methods to assess mechanical and electrical properties.

• Lead development of Design Verification Plans for welding and manage process qualification for VX4 certification.

• Optimise welding processes to improve quality, repeatability, efficiency, and minimise waste.

• Own in-process quality control methods and NDT equipment to identify, rework, and reduce scrap.

• Produce technical reports including weld strategies, metallurgical analysis, and performance data.

• Stay up to date with the latest welding and joining technologies for lithium-ion batteries.

What You’ll Bring

• Strong background in high-volume final assembly and lean manufacturing principles, ideally with NPI (new product introduction) experience.

• Hands-on expertise with laser welding equipment (Trumpf, Precitec) and proven ability to develop robust weld processes.

• Experience in automotive, aerospace, or related industries, with a focus on battery pack assembly highly desirable.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering or Materials Science (preferred), or equivalent hands-on experience.

• Formal laser welding training (manufacturer-specific or through bodies like TWI/AWS) is a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to take products from prototype to volume production.

• Familiarity with aerospace quality systems, regulations, and standards is advantageous.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills across internal teams, external suppliers, and stakeholders.

• Analytical mindset with a data-driven approach to problem-solving.

• Resilience and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
