About the company:

We're Twelve, the carbon transformation company—a new kind of chemical company that makes things from air, not oil. Our breakthrough technology eliminates emissions by transforming CO2 into critical materials, products and fuels.
When it comes to addressing climate change, carbon isn’t our nemesis. To the contrary, we see carbon as the element of change. Carbon isn’t just the building block of life, it’s the building block of the chemicals, materials and fuels that make up our modern world and power innovation. From the spring in our running shoes to our favorite electronics, to building materials, electric car parts and fuels, carbon makes it possible. The problem is we get this carbon today from fossil fuels in the form of petrochemicals, which creates CO2 emissions and accelerates climate change.
Carbon transformation fundamentally changes this paradigm by sourcing carbon from CO2 instead of fossil fuels. By replacing the fossil carbon in critical chemicals with renewable, recycled carbon from CO2, we can eliminate emissions from thousands of essential products and set a new standard for how things get made in the climate era.

Twelve is a new kind of chemical company built for the climate era. Our breakthrough technology eliminates emissions by turning CO2 into essential products. We are a team of scientists, engineers and problem solvers on a mission to fundamentally shift the way the world addresses climate change and lead the transition to a fossil free future with our carbon transformation technology.

Job Brief

We need you as part of a team of dedicated process development engineers that create and demonstrate scaled coating processes at pilot and production volumes. You will join the Materials Process Development Team in the MEA Fabrication Department, which is responsible for producing Twelve’s CO2-transforming membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) at the heart of our electrolyzers.

Right now, the Process Development Team is building Twelve’s first MEA Fabrication Pilot capability to support our product development and initial customer engagement, and define our manufacturing processes. As part of the team, you will explore, create, and validate processes that prepare our MEA coating methods for scale up and full commercial production.

Once processes are validated in the lab, you will have the opportunity to scale your process and integrate it into the pilot value chain. You will work across the company engaging with chemists, polymer and material scientists, software, mechanical and process engineers to deliver these processes and help us introduce the world’s first CO2 electrolyzer at scale.

What you will do

  • Your first few projects will focus on increasing the efficiency and capacity of current MEA coating techniques, informed by validated lab scale fabrication protocols.
  • After validation of this smaller scale process (achieved by satisfying a list of predetermined requirements), you will assist in the procurement of pilot scale equipment, lead the process development, and help integrate it into Twelve’s first MEA Fabrication Pilot value chain.
  • You will be supported by a diverse team of scientists and engineers throughout the company to develop, optimize, validate, and document these processes.
  • Within 6-12 months, it is our goal to have our process scaled and validated, after which it will be transferred to Twelve’s manufacturing group. You will have the opportunity to partner with other teams at Twelve. You will help scale their benchtop methods which range from coating methods to materials synthesis.

Who you are

  • You are able to demonstrate at least one of the following:
    • Proven experience in scaling continuous, or semi-continuous coating processes from lab, to pilot, to full scale production with an understanding of how each stage provides value to the company.
    • Documented experience in polymer extrusion, molding, or similar processes at pilot and production volumes.
    • A quality focused approach to process development with experience in NPI (New Product Introduction) strategies and requirements.
    • Experience in producing materials for energy storage or ion exchange in the battery or fuel cell industry.
    • Professional record of interacting with, or managing relationships with suppliers, vendors, and/or contract manufacturers.
  • You care about process documentation as well as clear intra team and inter team communication of technical ideas and conclusions.
  • You are proficient in analyzing and presenting data (experience with Python programming language and JMP statistical software a plus), and at least a minimum familiarity with accessing data from a database; you have curiosity and comfort applying fundamentals to learn about and solve problems outside your subject matter expertise.
  • You enjoy creatively building new hardware systems that will bring benchtop ideas to commercially relevant production scale.
  • You are a mission-driven individual who thrives on identifying new opportunities and taking action to investigate them.
  • You prioritize safety throughout your workflow.
