About Position
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will play a critical role in helping Fluence deliver the next generation of energy storage products for grid utility applications. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will primarily engage in the ongoing development of Fluence’s energy storage products, focusing on setting up and executing Mechanical, Thermal and Cooling System design and calculations that will guide product design and safety decisions. Fluence deploys lithium-ion batteries in utility-scale projects, typically inside metal enclosures. The work will be focused on systems related to internal and external design of the enclosures; internal equipment and battery layout, cooling circuit, chiller, and HVAC devices; and design to meet various published technical standards and codes. The ideal candidate will have a solid fundamental understanding of steady-state and transient thermal analysis techniques and strong proficiency in liquid cooling system equipment selection and supplier qualifications. Experience with cooling systems, both air cooling and liquid cooling and familiarity with NFPA codes such as NFPA 68 and 69 are beneficial.

As the Senior Mechanical Engineer I – Thermal & Cooling System at Fluence, you will bring.
Work with Suppliers along with Sourcing & Quality to ensure components design can be commercialized for production to meet our business objectives.-An ideal candidate will be able to handle requests from the product lead and be able to convert the requirement to technical problem statement and provide the best solution.-Execute the Numerical simulations within the required time frame, document and present the analysis results and be able to clearly explain/defend the assumptions, model, and meshing choices.-Propose design solutions that will improve the cooling and safety of the product.-Collaborate with other teams, including CAD, FEA, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Project Engineering, and Sales on ensuring successful deployments of Fluence products in large-scale energy storage projects.-Building critical relationships and leveraging expertise and capabilities from inside andoutside the organization to deliver results and create value.-Provide technical consultation to other departments and colleagues.-Demonstrate Fluence values.Skills & Qualifications
Required qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Thermal Engineering with 5+ years’ experience in fluid and thermal sciences
or Master’s degree with specialization in engineering mechanics, thermal and fluid sciences or equivalent and have 3+ years of experience in BESS enclosure design and engineering.
•Strong technical knowledge in 1D analytical calculation with emphasis on cooling system design using engineering fundamentals and cutting-edge tools such as ANSYS & MATLAB.
•Experience in determining sizing and placement of cooling ducts, Heat Exchangers, fans, and HVAC units by simulating both internal and external flows against heat sources and electrical components.
•Create specification documents for Chillers and Cooling units based on heat loss calculations for liquid cooled systems. Interface with equipment suppliers/manufacturers to validate design and test requirements.
•Thermal management design of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)/ Electronic enclosures.
•Experience implementing heat transfer analysis through conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations.
•Excellent English verbal and writing skills and works with minimal supervision while being a collaborative team player. Possesses sound business judgment.
Other qualifications:
•Know-how of end-to-end design and development of new component. Hands on with Creo, BOM, Quality control, supplier qualification & design reviews.
•Ability to automate Numerical Simulation workflow using either Ansys Workbench or custom post and preprocessing scripts.
•Ability to handle transient gas-flow simulations with species transport by performing non-reactive and reactive (combustion) CFD simulations. Understanding the stoichiometry of fuel-air mixtures, flame speed, and flammability limits.
•Previous experience in executing CFD simulations in HPC (high-performance computing) environment, either on-prem or cloud-based solutions.
