Octopus Energy Group is made up of 10 businesses spanning 6 countries across 3 continents, including: Octopus Energy Retail, Kraken Technologies, Octopus Energy Generation, Kraken Flex, Octopus Electric Vehicles, and the Octopus Centre for Net Zero. More on OEG @ octopusenergy.group

Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN) is a leader in sourcing, investing in, and managing a wide range of utility-scale renewable energy assets. As we continue to expand our investment base, we are dedicated to building a diverse team that reflects the communities we serve.

Since our entry into the renewables market in 2010, OEGEN has achieved remarkable milestones, becoming a leading investor in onshore wind across mainland Europe, the largest investor of solar power in Europe, and recently venturing into offshore wind projects.

Currently, we manage a global portfolio of over £7 billion in renewable energy assets. Our operational portfolio consists of more than three hundred large scale energy-generating companies. We take pride in our wind farms, solar power plants, and upcoming projects in energy storage and hydrogen.

About the role

OEGEN’s Energy Markets team plays a key role in delivering optimal outcomes for our funds. The key risk for our generation assets  is their exposure to wholesale power prices – understanding this risk and managing this exposure is the core priority for our Energy Markets Team.

What this means in practice is that you’ll be using your commercial expertise and understanding of power market dynamics to develop and implement revenue hedging strategies across our assets. In addition to this, your power markets expertise is a critical tool for the wider team, and you’ll be consulted on during asset acquisition processes and for new market entry.

The role will be based in London, with flexibility and remote work options to accommodate your needs and maintain work-life balance.

We’re more interested in finding the right person, so we’re happy to be relatively flexible on the level which the candidate is hired at.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Are you ready for a career with us? We want to ensure you have all the tools and environment you need to unleash your potential. Need any specific accommodations? Whether you require specific accommodations or have a unique preference, let us know, and we'll do what we can to customise your interview process for comfort and maximum magic!

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.

What you'll do

  • Use your commercial expertise and understanding of power market dynamics to develop and implement revenue hedging strategies across our assets and funds.
  • Originate and execute Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), managing exposure to wholesale power prices and including route-to-market arrangements for potential acquisitions and new technologies like battery storage.
  • Share your power markets expertise with the wider team, being consulted on during asset acquisition processes and for new market entry.
  • Oversee adherence to risk management procedures, including managing and reporting on fund hedge positions.
  • Prepare reports providing timely and accurate updates to the wider OEG team for inclusion in reporting to OEG’s key stakeholders.
  • Monitor relevant energy market regulations and drivers to provide succinct analysis for the wider team and investors.
  • Analyse external advisors’ power price forecasts, methodology, and key drivers to inform the asset valuation process.
  • What you'll need

  • Experience within renewables or the wider energy sector, ideally focused on originating and executing PPAs and/or understanding electricity market dynamics and associated risks.
  • Excellent understanding of power market structures and awareness of key risk factors in PPA negotiations (experience with battery storage route to market agreements is a bonus).
  • Highly analytical and numerate with experience working with large data sets in Excel, capable of analysing, modelling, and interpreting data effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • A motivated individual looking to further develop their commercial and financial skills within a collaborative team environment.
  • Exceptional project management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to manage complex workloads in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commercial mindset, able to understand the impact of commercial positions on investments and existing portfolio assets, with the aptitude and desire to take increasing ownership over commercial decision-making.
  • Flexibility and a “can do” attitude with a willingness to learn and support others.
  • Why else you'll love it here

  • Wondering what the salary for this role is? On a call with one of our recruiters, this is always something we cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit! We will also ask your current salary - we want to let you know this upfront so you're comfortable talking about it on a call with us.
  • Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, our Group CEO, Greg has recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our people. We’ve also been placed in the top 10 companies for senior leadership
