We are looking for an Applications Scientist with experience in materials / textiles who will play a critical role in bringing world-changing technologies from the lab to commercialization and scale. This role is based in Chicago with near-term travel to Bozeman, Montana, and a target start date in Sept/Oct 2021. There will be competitive compensation commensurate with experience.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ability to run wet chemistry formulation work and run basic stoichiometry calculations
  • Execute a variety of experiments using lab fermenters and shake flasks, under the supervision of the principal scientists, with detailed written instructions
  • Monitor the details of experiments and notify scientists if the process deviates from normal or expected values
  • Conduct routine biological measurements using specific equipment
  • Record results using a laboratory notebook
  • Input data as determined and export data from dataloggers per SOPs using standard computer applications
  • Prepare media for experiments
  • Plan/organize daily tasks based on provided experimental schedule
  • Maintain work area and equipment to be clean, safe, and functional
  • Keep up to date with the textile and leather chemistry literature, work with in-house experts around cutting-edge research, and apply knowledge to new iterations of the material
  • Work closely with cross-functional talent from the Research and Development, Business, and Manufacturing teams
  • Apply basic principles of (Bio)chemistry to develop new innovative materials
  • Provide support to analytical and research and development teams
  • Establish quality, performance, and sustainability standards in the laboratory
  • Experience with spray systems is a plus
  • Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemistry / Biochemistry, Materials Science, or related field of study
  • Experience working on applied chemistry within the textile or other biomaterial industry; experience in textile processing (preparation, dyeing, finishing), manufacturing, supply chain, or product management a plus
  • Demonstrated success working cross-functionally across engineering, marketing, business development
  • Hands-on experience with analytical techniques and methodologies, e.g., FT-IR, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer, optical microscopes and various wet chemical methods
  • Computer skills in data spreadsheet, work processing, and PowerPoint presentation programs
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in fabric testing and standard methods (ISO, ASTM) preferred
