About the company:

Carbon Clean is the point-source carbon capture expert, driving the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries for more than 15 years. The company is eliminating the barriers of cost and space through its breakthrough modular CycloneCC technology, which cuts the total installed cost and overall physical footprint by up to 50% compared with conventional solutions.

We see the role as

The Engineering & Process Research (E&PR) team looks to drive process innovation within Carbon Clean, solve high-value problems, and identify and fill critical knowledge gaps. As an R&D Engineer within the E&PR organization, you will be responsible for building fit for purpose reactor/contactor models and thermodynamic models to support new process development and engineering at Carbon Clean, in addition to providing timely and high-quality analysis of process data and providing recommendations to the technical teams.

You will be an integral part of the idea generation process, and your work will be critical to driving process innovation and intellectual property generation for Carbon Clean. You will also proactively engage with internal and external stakeholders, consulting with thoughtful and well-communicated solutions custom-fit to their requirements.

We’ll trust you to

  • Build and own the development of custom models for reaction processes and building blocks in Carbon Clean’s CO2 capture processes, validate models using field and bench-scale data, and continuously improve models to improve predictions.
  • Build and own the development of thermodynamics (phase-equilibria) models, property models, degradation models, validating models using lab data, and continuously better models to improve predictions.
  • Evaluate different modeling platforms and develop new approaches to improve accuracy of model predictions.
  • Support new idea generation, de-risk novel process concepts, and pilot/process-scale troubleshooting activities.
  • Proactively prepare simulation plans in support of project goals and perform post-processing and data analysis using your knowledge of reaction engineering and thermodynamics.
  • Prepare figures, reports, and presentations to document project results. Present these results regularly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the company’s core technologies through reading literature and attending conferences and webinars.

Requirements

You’ll be successful in this role if you have a combination of below knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience (3-4 years) with:
  • Developing and applying multi-scale models of process units including reactive mass transfer unit operations, rotating packed beds, packed columns, scrubbing vessels, etc.
  • Building, solving, and optimizing robust kinetic models which incorporate fundamental process chemistry.
  • Software packages: Aspen Plus, gPROMS, AVEVA Process Simulation or similar.
  • Programming languages: Python, MATLAB
  • Using off-the-shelf optimizers to fit models to experimental data (example: HEEDS, SciPy, Pyomo).
  • 3-4 years of experience with writing custom rate-based process blocks using Aspen Custom Modeler or gPROMS in an industrial R&D setting.
  • Solid understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, dimensionless groups, and development of heat transfer and mass transfer correlations from experiments.
  • Established track-record of generating novel IP related to process research.
  • Demonstrated experience with project leadership and technical mentoring in an industrial R&D setting.
  • Willingness to work and collaborate with a global team in the UK and US time-zones.
