As the SIE for Packaging, you will own the end-to-end industrialization of packaging solutions for our Made-to-Spec (MTS) components. These are custom-designed, high-value parts that require bespoke protection and handling strategies. You will serve as the critical technical link between our internal Product Design teams and our external fabrication partners. You are the voice of the design team to the supply base, ensuring that every supplier knows exactly what to source, how to build, and how to validate the packaging that protects our core technology.
Relocation assistance is available.
Requirements Translation: Partner with Design Engineering to extract critical-to-quality (CTQ) requirements for MTS parts (tolerances, surface finishes, fragility) and translate them into comprehensive packaging specifications.
Full-Cycle Design: Manage or perform the actual design work for custom dunnage, shipping racks, and specialized containers using SolidWorks, ensuring compatibility with both domestic and international logistics.
Supplier Technical Management: Act as the "Design Authority" when interfacing with packaging design or component suppliers. Communicate technical specs clearly so they can execute sourcing and fabrication without ambiguity.
Industrialization & APQP: Drive the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for packaging assets. Ensure suppliers have the right processes in place to meet our capacity, quality, and durability standards.
DFM & DFA Integration: Ensure all packaging designs support "Design for Manufacturing" and "Design for Assembly" at Form Factory, focusing on how packaging interfaces with automated lines.
Validation: Define and oversee testing protocols (e.g., ISTA, ASTM) to prove that custom MTS packaging survives the rigors of the global supply chain.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent) with a track record of exceptional technical ability.
Expert proficiency in SolidWorks, or other CAD modeling software, and a deep understanding of technical drawings, including complex datum structures and GD&T.
Strong knowledge of diverse materials, including aluminum, steel, composites, and foam, and how they behave in transit.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate risk effectively across cross-functional teams and external partners.
Familiarity with automated warehousing, high-volume manufacturing, and industry-standard testing (ASTM/Mil-Spec).
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV—an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
