About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

Working arrangements

Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split.

Overview

TE Magnetics, the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) division of Tokamak Energy, transforms cutting-edge HTS innovation into products that unlock new capabilities in energy, transport, and science. This role focuses on developing magnet manufacturing technology to scale up TE’s existing HTS coil technology to build magnets for spherical tokamaks and beyond. The activities focus mainly on the rapidly developing, prototyping and testing HTS technologies.

Requirements

  • Work closely with technicians to fabricate high temperature superconducting (HTS) components, such as joints, coils and full magnet assemblies, developing manufacturing processes and techniques for fusion and other applications.
  • Design and use bespoke experimental test equipment, working with mechanical design engineers to design components.
  • Work closely with technicians to instrument and test HTS components and magnets under cryogenic conditions.
  • Analyse data using numerical software packages such as Matlab,
  • Develop design tools and modelling code, where appropriate.
  • Interpret test results, produce clear written reports, and present findings to key internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct safety analyses and safety case preparation for new activities conducted in the laboratory
  • Liaise with stakeholders internal to Tokamak Energy
  • Liaise with key external suppliers and subcontractors
  • Support commercialisation of the company’s HTS magnet technology
  • Generate and document intellectual property

Requirements and attributes we value

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant Engineering or Physics based discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience working with cryogenic experimental apparatus.
  • Awareness of basic mechanical design principles such as materials selection, common machining techniques, specific considerations for cryogenic operation, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with electrical measurement equipment and instrumentation such as power supplies, voltmeters, magnetic field sensors and temperature sensors.
  • Thorough understanding of measurement accuracy, sensitivity, precision and resolution.
  • Willingness to work ‘hands on’ in a laboratory setting.
  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation, and commitment to working to defined timescales.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team of engineers, physicists, designers, and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.
  • Leadership skills, to guide technicians and take responsibility for delivering high quality outputs
  • Demonstrated track record of innovation, creativity and project delivery in a complex engineering / technology development environment.
  • A broad engineering experience would be useful, as magnet development work is a highly multidisciplinary field.

Benefits

  • Salary dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Discretionary 3-day festive break depending on business needs
  • Eligible for discretionary performance related bonus
