About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. We work with governments and industry to develop and bring fusion and HTS solutions to market through innovation and strategic partnerships. A major part of this is our end to end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.

We are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.

Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is headquartered in Oxfordshire, with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Today, we employ over 300 people and have secured more than £280 million in investment.

We operate through three divisions:

Fusion - Fusion energy technologies, expertise and testbeds for government and private fusion programmes, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.

TE Magnetics - HTS systems for commercial applications including fusion energy, power distribution, life sciences, and propulsion.

Ridgway Machines - Manufacturing equipment for the superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors, enabling the rapid industrialisation of HTS products.

Looking for a role where you can have a real impact on safety in a complex, high-hazard environment?

We’re hiring an EHS Business Partner to work closely with engineering and operational teams, ensuring health, safety and environmental standards are not just met — but actively embedded into day-to-day work.

This is a highly operational role, suited to someone who is grounded and experienced in fast-moving environments. You’ll be visible on site, working alongside teams, and confident engaging in constructive, sometimes challenging conversations to ensure the right safety outcomes are achieved.

You’ll partner with leaders across the business to drive compliance, support activity on the ground, and continuously improve how EHS is integrated into operations.

Why this role

This is an opportunity to step into a role where you can directly influence how EHS is delivered on the ground — working alongside experienced teams in a fast-paced, technically complex environment.

If you’re someone who prefers being close to operations, building strong relationships, and making practical improvements that matter, this role offers exactly that.

About you

  • You enjoy a role that is primarily operational (around 90% focused on site-based activity) and be happy to be based 5 days a week in our Abingdon office.
  • You are grounded, pragmatic, and experienced in supporting fast-moving operational environments
  • You’re comfortable communicating with a wide range of stakeholders and able to hold clear, confident and robust conversations when needed
  • You’re confident challenging behaviours or decisions in a constructive, professional way
  • You enjoy supporting multiple areas of the business, with some cross-site collaboration
  • You’re comfortable with occasional travel to our Leicester site (approximately once per month)
  • You prefer a hands-on, visible role and being close to the work

What you’ll be doing

  • Partnering with managers and teams to deliver safe, compliant operations
  • Providing hands-on EHS advice, coaching and practical support on the ground
  • Supporting risk assessments, safe systems of work and contractor management
  • Leading audits and inspections, identifying improvements and driving follow-up actions
  • Monitoring EHS performance and producing clear, actionable reporting
  • Investigating incidents and supporting structured root cause analysis
  • Advising on current and emerging UK legislation and its practical application
  • Representing EHS in operational meetings, reviews and planning discussions
  • Promoting best practice and driving a strong, proactive safety culture

What success looks like

  • EHS is visible, trusted and actively embedded within operational teams
  • Teams are supported by someone confident enough to challenge and influence effectively
  • Improvements in consistency and compliance across working practices
  • Strong, credible support provided to a busy operational environment
  • Clear and meaningful EHS performance data used to inform decisions
  • Practical improvements implemented that make a real difference on site

Requirements

Essential

  • Experience working within an engineering or operational environment
  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) or demonstrable experience
  • Proven experience in an EHS advisory or business partner role
  • Background in engineering, manufacturing, R&D or other high-hazard environments
  • Strong understanding of UK health, safety and environmental legislation
  • Experience working with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems
  • Hands-on experience with risk assessments, audits, inspections and investigations
  • Knowledge of COSHH and managing hazardous substances
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to challenge and hold robust conversations where required
  • A practical, proactive and resilient approach, with confidence working close to operations

Desirable

  • Experience with quality management systems (ISO 9001)
  • Professional membership (e.g. IOSH, IIRSM)
  • Internal audit experience
  • Exposure to advanced manufacturing, energy, or high-tech environments
  • Experience with specialist risk areas (e.g. machinery, cryogenics, electrical systems)
  • Experience producing EHS dashboards or performance reporting

Benefits

  • Salary range £50,000 to £65,000 dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus discretionary festive shutdown
  • Performance-led rewards including discretionary bonus, innovation and merit schemes
  • Share options – a stake in our future success
  • Pension and comprehensive financial protection package including death in service and critical illness cover
  • Health and wellbeing support, including cash plan and 24/7 assistance
  • Ongoing investment in your growth with training and career progression
  • Be part of world-changing innovation in Fusion Energy
