Role Summary

The Materials Engineering team at Rivian brings together a unique group of specialized engineers that can provide expert-level analysis of the key materials and processes that comprise our products. From long-term research and development, to production blockers and in-service failures – we serve a diverse group of customers and are always looking to go further! Joining our team will stretch both your breadth and depth in the field of materials science, while giving you the unique opportunity to see, touch and drive the results of your work.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use laboratory skills in a state-of-the-art materials characterization lab to generate data for failure analysis and materials research and development projects
  • Use your passion for material information systems to create new data types and structures to capture more the vast amount of material data generated each day at Rivian
  • Work with other experts in Materials, Sustainability and Supply Chain Management to develop and source the next generation of sustainable polymers
  • Apply your skills in research and experimental design to establish the design limits for high-strength Generation 3 steel alloys
  • Improve the quality and reliability of robotic welding by correlating process parameters to defects, microstructure and fatigue performance

Qualifications

  • Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters, or PhD degree at an accredited university
  • Actively pursuing a degree or one closely related in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Top-notch communication skills and the ability to make technical details accessible to your customers both 1:1 and in a presentation setting
  • Coursework on structure/property relationships, material processing, and mechanics of materials
  • Capable of basic laboratory techniques (metallography, optical microscopy, sample preparation, etc) and the ability to quickly and safely learn new scientific instruments
  • Knowledge of an automotive-relevant material system or process is a plus (eg. plastic injection molding, TIG welding, 6000-series aluminum alloys, etc)
  • A willingness to get your hands dirty: our work takes us from the lab to the field, the factory, test sites and everywhere in between. Our vehicles are adventurous and so are we!

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Internships: The range of pay for internships is 25.00-51.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on location, and other factors permitted by law.

Rivian provides robust wellness benefits, and a medical insurance package for interns, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
