We are looking for passionate, driven, and curious people to join our fast-growing team. The Biomaterials Analytical Biochemistry Intern will help a world-class team to do cutting-edge research and commercialization of a biomaterial at the intersection of multiple disciplines. This role is based in Bozeman, MT, and has an immediate start date.

Job Summary:

This position will involve sample preparation and chemical/biochemical analyses of fermentations for Biomaterials.  The successful candidate will generate statistically representative samples from fermentation media, fungal biomass, and secreted broth components. Under the guidance of key team members, the candidate will perform metabolite quantification by HPLC, IC and colorimetric assay, and report results to key stakeholders, generating robust mass balance understanding. The position will require careful documentation and data archiving. In this position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of exciting new techniques for quantification of new metabolites.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Use analytical techniques to analyze inorganic and organic compounds to determine physical or chemical properties, structures, relationships, compositions or reactions of a novel/new biomaterial
  • Prepare samples for analysis in accordance with SOPs, allowing reproducible quantification of key analytes
  • Maintain clean laboratory equipment and instruments to guarantee all technology is in working order and troubleshoot any problems or issues that arise with laboratory equipment
  • Prepare formulations and chemical mixtures with guidance from senior technical staff
  • Analyze and compile data from experiments and present to the broader team
  • Order chemicals and other laboratory supplies and keep a close watch on expiration dates to ensure quality control in the lab
  • Fully supports the location health, safety and environmental programs by participating in their implementation, maintenance and enforcement as well as compliance with corporate programs
  • Experience:

  • Senior in undergraduate year or post graduates working on a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical or Organic chemistry
  • Strong skills in the areas of Analytical Chemistry or Biochemistry, organization, computers, interpersonal communication, laboratory research
  • Demonstrable experience in sample preparation and data analysis for techniques such as HPLC, LC, FPLC, IC, enzyme kinetics, SDS-PAGE, DSC/TGA, moisture analysis or rheology
  • Deep curiosity and excitement with making discoveries (“that’s not what I expected – nice!”)
  • Scientific mindset: “my mental model says this will happen – did it? Why not?”
  • Basic understanding of Chemistry/Biochemistry and associated analytical techniques and, more generally, the scientific method
  • Two or more years of hands-on laboratory experience
  • Willingness to learn about topics that span a wide set of related fields (Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science)
  • Experience with statistics software, scripting (JMP, Python, SQL, VB, etc.), or image analysis/ image processing is a plus
  • Personal Qualifications:
