This is your chance to be a part of this extraordinary team.

Vertical is one the world’s leading eVTOL businesses, and a pioneer of this ground-breaking new segment, which marks the beginning of sustainable aviation.

Founded in 2016, Vertical uniquely combines the best of the aerospace, Formula 1 and automotive industries and has become one of only seven companies globally to have successfully flown multiple full-scale eVTOL prototypes.  The VX4, is a world-leading fully composite tilt-rotor winged eVTOL that will carry one pilot and four passengers or cargo.  VX4 is in plan to be  certified in late 2024, placing the business in the top two companies globally with a commercially viable aircraft capable of spanning intra and intercity passenger and cargo eVTOL markets.

We are looking for an Aircraft Architect who will:

Enjoy working with a world class team comprised of leading aerospace and technology thinkers as well as some of the finest engineering talent. Of course, you will possess or be able to rapidly adopt a passion for sustainable aviation and it’s benefits for both society and sustainability.

Vertical is a values-led business that embraces diversity in all its forms in particular diversity of thought. Vertical is committed to building an industry leading team offering global perspectives that represent the communities it serves.

The responsibilities and duties of the Aircraft Architect will be as follows:

In this role, you will be part of a team that will define and develop the configuration of the VX4 aircraft. You will:

  • Work with multiple groups to define and refine aircraft requirements and functions
  • Develop the configuration and architecture of the aircraft to ensure that programme requirements will be met by the final design
  • Perform trade studies that assess different aircraft solutions to meet our requirements
  • Receive tasking, guidance and coaching from more senior members of the team

The successful Aircraft Architect will have the following Experiences & Qualifications:

We seek an individual who has a genuine interest in aircraft and has the building blocks necessary to contribute to an effectively integrated vehicle solution. In your academic record and career to date you have demonstrated that you have a passion for aircraft design through your selection of courses and work placements.

You will need:

  • The ability to work out and explain the links between aircraft design and the physics behind it
  • Natural knowledge of how an aircraft flies and operates.
  • An understanding of requirements, functions, safety analysis and standards and how they drive aircraft design
  • A good understanding of how elements of the aircraft are integrated together to create a complete and performant vehicle
  • Some relevant industry experience of working in an aircraft design environment
  • An innovative and flexible approach to problem solving: this is a new industry segment and we will have to develop novel, non-traditional approaches in many areas
  • A willingness and flexibility to try your hand at different skills and subjects associated with aircraft architecture and conceptual design
  • The ability to bring people together on common problems and trades and facilitate finding optimised solutions, especially when dealing with more experienced colleagues
  • The ability to identify gaps in our processes and methods and develop tools to fill those gaps, as well as developing further the tools we already have. For this, good skills in Matlab would be desirable
  • A Bachelors degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering or similar
