Your role and your team:

We are looking for an outstanding Thermal Engineer to join our innovative team that will shape the future of urban e-mobility. This position will contribute, as part of an integrated cross-functional team, to the battery electric storage architecture, design, and delivery of the Lilium Jet.

As a thermal analysis expert in Lilium’s integrated energy storage system team, you will be responsible for developing the thermal aspects of our electric energy storage and distributions systems in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment. You will develop thermal models using first principles, simulations, and testing. You will validate these models against actual hardware and use the models to guide the design and architecture of the battery pack system. Your skills will be applied to everything from the high-level system architecture and performance scoping to the detailed convective, conductive, and radiative heat transfer of battery cells, modules, power electronics, bus bars and more to achieve reliable performance predictions and efficient heat transfer solutions at low weight, volume, and costs.

Your Day to Day:

  • Break down technical thermal engineering challenges into tractable models and simulations to identify potential problems, define suitable operating conditions, and optimize designs.
  • Develop component and system level thermal models with an emphasis on fit for purpose level of abstraction.
  • Collaborate with a broad group of design, test, and simulation engineers within and beyond system boundaries to achieve integrated and optimized component and system designs guided by your analyses and simulations.
  • Propose and develop measurement techniques to obtain the necessary information to accurately model the system of interest.
  • Document critical results in technical reports and proactively share relevant insight across stakeholders.
  • Actively support improving team efficiency by shaping processes and building methods and guidelines

Your Profile:

  • Good understanding of battery technology and its applications in electrical systems
  • Demonstrated ability for analyzing thermal and multi-physics systems to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • In-depth knowledge of fluid dynamics, conjugate heat transfer and their prediction with state-of-the-art CFD methods
  • Proficiency in working with CFD simulation tools (ideally Star-CCM+), potential network solvers (e.g., Amesim, Simscape)
  • Skilled Python programmer
  • High level of self-reliance with the ability to work in a team, as well as autonomously.
