Systems Engineer- Flight Simulator

Your role and your team:

We are looking for an outstanding Systems Engineer - Flight Simulation to join our innovative team and thus shape the future of urban e-mobility.

Our Simulators & Real Time Test System team is at the cutting edge of component/systems/aircraft Test Rig and Flight Simulators development, bringing our Lilium Jet model to life in a virtual, simulated world powered by state-of-the-art technology. We work with teams across Lilium, from Test Pilots to Chief Engineers, to understand and simulate how the aircraft of tomorrow will perform.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of simulator development in the emerging E-VTOL industry.

Your primary responsibility will be to lead the internal and outsourced development and integration of the engineering simulator, which covers broad range of hardware and software applications within a distributed architecture as part of Lilium System Integration Laboratory. In your role, you will also lead the continuous improvement and development of the engineering simulator as a valuable engineering asset for Lilium in the future.

Your day to day:

  • Manage the suppliers in charge of the design and build of Lilium Engineering Simulator as part of the Lilium System Integration Laboratory
  • Coordinate the continuous improvement (updates, modifications, software loads) of the engineering simulator together with internal software teams as well as the external main supplier of the engineering simulator.
  • Lead configuration management, acceptance and fidelity testing of configurations, and ensure overall readiness of the engineering simulator for the internal users and stakeholders.
  • Collect and describe the need for changes and updates, define requirements and follow-up on development and implementation by means of project management.
  • Lead and/or coordinate the development of modular, scalable software applications for our engineering simulators, for example:
    • Applications to command, control, monitor and test the simulator and its integration with other test platforms, e.g. avionics test rigs or aircraft e-bird.
    • GUIs for simulation and analysis
    • Software Interface development for simulator components, i.e.: hardware-in-the-loop, data recording and visualization tools, etc.
    • Development of various other peripheral software systems to enable and enhance simulation usability and operation.
    • Coordinate the integration of in-house simulation models and third-party applications into the simulator distributed architecture, in close collaboration with our suppliers.
  • Drive the development of the mechanical and electrical aspects of the Engineering Simulator, based on aircraft design data produced by the engineering team.
  • Lead the hardware/software integration & testing on flight simulator devices.
  • Keep current on future technologies and products to determine where and how such products can be incorporated into designs.

Your profile:

  • BA/MA in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or similar degree; alternatively, a technical background and long-term proven and strong experience in the relevant fields
  • At least 8 years of experience working in Test Rigs or Flight Simulators development, in a distributed, real-time simulation context.
  • Experience with design and operation of an aircraft integration lab through aircraft development and certification is a strong plus.
  • Experience with development, engineering, and operations of FSTDs in either civil or military aviation is a strong plus.
  • Expertise with industry standard programming and scripting languages (e.g C++, Python), communication protocols/architectures and real time Operating Systems
  • Familiarity with software development best practices
  • Good skillset and experience in (agile) project management
  • Practical experience with Hardware-in-the Loop test benches or rapid-prototyping simulation equipment is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Simulink Real Time, Speedgoat and the integration of Simulink Coder generated code is a strong plus.
