Hyphen is an automated makeline designed to increase efficiency in the kitchen with less errors and lower costs. Build perfectly portioned bowls and plates according to your custom recipes.
Hyphen is a foodservice platform designed to help restaurant owners, operators, and budding chefs move their businesses forward by putting their kitchen operations on autopilot. We are addressing the operational complexities in the kitchen with the use of AI-based software and robotics. We help restaurants augment their workforce, reduce food waste, and ensure meals are created the way their chef intended.
Founded in 2020, our team is composed of leaders in advanced food-robotics, food-tech, and food-service – we know kitchens and the equipment that makes them run. We’ve seen the challenges that restaurants face as dining preferences continue to shift, and we’re here to help them adapt. We champion thoughtful, human-centered design, and we see its potential to improve our daily lives.
After experiencing a crucible moment amidst the global pandemic in 2020 (you can read more here), Hyphen was born to help restaurants in a time of need. Today, we have customers across the US with reservations for hundreds of systems to design, build, and deploy.
We’ve raised over $50M from top VCs and we’re growing rapidly. We have offices in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, with many of our roles open to partial or fully remote work. We’re a team of food and technology enthusiasts, laser focused on revolutionizing the restaurant landscape together.
The Opportunity:
Work at the intersection of Robotics and Food Delivery. As a Staff mechanical engineer at Hyphen, your contribution will be instrumental in driving the heart of our business - automated customized meal preparation at scale. You will play a key role in designing and building hardware solutions for our robotic makeline. Develop cutting-edge ingredient dispensing systems, material handling automation, and more. You will get to own projects from concept to production, utilizing your mechanical engineering background in the challenging field of food automation.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
What You'll Do
Develop cutting-edge ingredient dispensing systems, from R&D, through prototyping and scaling, into high volume production.Create detailed design and oversee the design of ingredient dispensers, including design for injection molding, and design for cleaning.Test hardware components and systems. Perform validation and reliability testing.Invent new dispensing solutions and develop new dispenser designs to address customer requirements and consumer trends.Apply your knowledge of materials, mechanics and ideally food processes to develop solutions that address the challenges of automated fresh food dispensing at scale. Perform analysis and trials to evaluate prototype dispensers.Own the dispenser design through the product lifecycle.Transfer engineering designs to manufacturing partners. Work closely with other professionals in hardware, software, product, culinary, and operations teams to develop to ensure products meet customer needs.
Who You Are:
You have a bachelor’s or master's degree in Mechanical engineering, or equivalent in experience and ability. You have 7+ years of mechanical engineering industry experience, including owning products from concept to production. You have strong understanding of engineering first principles. You find large challenges exciting and enjoy discovering and defining problems as much as solving them. You deliver. You may enjoy thoughtful conversations about problems and perfecting designs, but in the end, you know that what matters is delivering a manufacturable solution that works every time. You are a cross-disciplinary team member. You are excited to work with and learn from software, mechanical, electrical engineers, and culinary operations. You are comfortable communicating across teams.Resourceful, flexible, and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing injection molded parts for food dispensing/delivery is preferred but not required. You have experience with electromechanical design and products. You have experience with validation engineering and process development. You have experience with value engineering and cost reduction.Experience designing and building heating and cooling (HVAC) solutions in food applications is a plus.Benefits
