Role Description

We are seeking a Staff Manufacturing Engineer to join our Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team and lead the development, integration, and launch of automated manufacturing systems for Form Energy’s Iron-Air multi-day battery. This role is focused on translating early-stage product and process concepts into robust, scalable, and production-ready automated equipment.

This position requires a manufacturing engineer who operates comfortably at the system level, combining deep automation expertise with strong process development fundamentals. You will own automated equipment from concept through commissioning and ramp, drive technical decision-making across mechanical, electrical, controls, vision, and safety domains, and ensure processes are designed for capability, yield, and long-term stability.

You will partner closely with Process Engineering, Product Design, Controls, Quality, Software, and Operations to define requirements, manage technical risk, and lead structured experimentation using DoE and statistical analysis to mature processes during new product introduction. This role is hands-on, execution-focused, and requires the ability to lead complex technical efforts with limited oversight.

Your work will make a significant and daily impact on cutting-edge battery technology that will revolutionize the electric grid and bring major change to grid reliability and sustainability. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a company with a direct impact on the nature of energy storage and renewables.

This role will be located at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV, which is just a short drive outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the design, development, integration, and launch of automated manufacturing equipment for new product introduction and scale-up

  • Own automated systems end-to-end, including requirements definition, vendor engagement, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and production ramp

  • Drive process development using structured experimentation, including DoE and statistical analysis (JMP, Minitab, SPC), to understand tradeoffs and establish capable, repeatable processes

  • Partner with Controls, Robotics, Vision, and Safety teams to ensure automation systems meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements

  • Identify system-level constraints and risks, propose data-backed solutions, and drive alignment across cross-functional stakeholders

  • Support transition from development to operations by establishing process controls, documentation, and training to enable sustainable production

  • Mentor and technically guide other engineers, contributing to standards, best practices, and organizational learning

What you'll bring:

  • 10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience with a strong focus on automation and equipment development

  • Proven experience launching automated equipment in a production or pilot manufacturing environment

  • Strong foundation in process development, experimental design, and statistical analysis

  • Hands-on experience with automation systems including robotics, sensors, vision systems, and industrial controls

  • Ability to operate independently in ambiguous, fast-moving NPI environments

  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to influence decisions across teams
