About the company:

Harbinger is a commercial electric vehicle (EV) company on a mission to transform an industry starving for innovation. Harbinger's best-in-class team of EV, battery, and drivetrain experts have pooled their deep experience to support the growing demand for medium-duty EVs. Leveraging a foundation of proprietary, in-house developed vehicle technologies designed specifically for commercial vehicles, Harbinger is bringing a first-of-its-kind EV platform to market, priced for zero acquisition premium.
Harbinger: familiar form, revolutionary foundation.

About Harbinger

Harbinger Motors Inc. is a Southern California-based electric vehicle manufacturer on a mission to transform the automotive and transportation industries, bringing to market EVs developed from the ground up to address the needs of the Medium Duty vehicle industry. This broad, and to date poorly addressed, market segment includes class 4 to 7 commercial delivery vehicles, RVs and utility vehicles, among others. Leveraging a foundation of proprietary, in-house developed vehicle technologies, Harbinger's first-of-its-kind EV platform will bring enhancements in vehicle performance, durability and operator comfort. And importantly, Harbinger's vehicles will be priced for zero acquisition premium relative to traditional gas- and diesel-based competitors, removing one of the most tenacious barriers to EV adoption.

Harbinger's team, with operations in Southern California and Michigan, includes industry veterans with expertise in powertrain, battery, chassis and software development, along with leaders in advanced manufacturing, corporate development, operations and finance. Our team members come from leading innovators, both in and out of the automotive industry, including Tesla, Rivian, Canoo, Ford, Anduril, and SpaceX.

Founded in 2021, Harbinger is a venture-backed startup on a rapid growth trajectory, looking for candidates that thrive on tackling complex challenges and who share in our passion to bring clean transportation alternatives to a segment of the market starving for innovation.

Job Summary:

Harbinger is a young commercial electric vehicle (EV) company focused on the forgotten and the most crucial part of our transportation needs, the medium duty trucking space. We plan to bring electrification to class 4-7 commercial vehicles with customer centric active safety features which are natively integrated into our system. We are currently seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual to join our ADAS team as our Linux Kernel Engineer.

As a Staff Controls Engineer supporting our ADAS team, you will play a crucial role in developing and optimizing low-level software that powers our Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). You will work closely with hardware and software teams to deploy and maintain embedded operating systems that drive AI inference and real-time video processing in our vehicles. Your work will influence both current and future generations of our ADAS platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead the Development of Advanced Control Algorithms:

  • Design and implement cutting-edge control algorithms for Level 2 ADAS features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centering Control (LCC), and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA).
  • Leverage expertise in vehicle dynamics and control theory to optimize performance, safety, and robustness of ADAS features.

Develop Agile Testing Framework:

  • Establish and maintain an Agile testing framework to ensure rapid, iterative testing of control algorithms.

Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams:

  • Work closely with perception, sensor fusion, and hardware teams to ensure that control systems are fully compatible and optimized for vehicle performance.

Innovate and Iterate on Control Strategies:

  • Drive innovation in control strategies by exploring and implementing new methodologies, tools, and technologies.
  • Continuously iterate on control algorithms based on real-world data, simulation results, and feedback from testing.

Testing and Validation:

  • Lead comprehensive testing efforts, including simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and on-road testing, to validate the performance and safety of control systems.
  • Analyze test data to identify potential issues, optimize control strategies, and ensure that systems meet all relevant safety and performance standards.

Compliance and Safety Standards:

  • Ensure that all control systems comply with industry standards such as ISO 26262 and ASPICE, as well as any relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Stay informed about evolving regulations and standards to ensure that ADAS control systems remain compliant and state-of-the-art.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • A Master's Degree or PhD in Control Systems, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline is highly preferred.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in automotive control systems, with a focus on vehicle dynamics and ADAS.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing control algorithms for Level 2 or higher ADAS features in a production environment.
  • Strong experience with Model-Based Design (MBD) and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Extensive experience in system integration, including working with ECUs, sensors, and actuators.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing methodologies.

Technical Expertise:

  • Deep understanding of control theory, vehicle dynamics, and state estimation techniques.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and embedded systems development.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle communication protocols such as CAN, Automotive Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with sensor technologies (Radar, cameras) and their integration into vehicle control systems is a plus
