As a Hydraulic Design Engineer, and Fluid Actuation Subject Matter Expert, at Zoox you will consult on projects including active suspension, thermal coolant and refrigeration, and sensor cleaning using air and liquid coolant. You will work with engineers across internal vehicle engineering teams, and various suppliers to evaluate design, advise on best practices and develop road maps for future applications.
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $185,000 to $307,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.

In this role, you will
Apply systems engineering and problem-solving tools and methods (System V, Boundary Diagrams, P-Diagrams, DFMEA, RCL, RDM) for design development, cascading requirements, and project scoping.Deep dive fluid actuation issues regarding valves, pumps, accumulators, and sealsInteract with and facilitate cross functional teams in the development of requirements and design verification plans for attribute and robustness assessment.Lead and manage work streams to achieve project deliverables including simulation and testing for technology benefit assessment and demonstration.Develop and analyze simulations and testing to assess system performance and recommend design improvementsCollaborate with other teams at Zoox for developing the new technologiesDevelop and coordinate cross functional inputs and requirements to be shared with suppliers for soliciting design proposalsInteract with suppliers to assess new systems and component designsInteract with CAD designers for vehicle package assessmentReview and approve systems engineering documentation and communicate engineering assumptions to cross-functional teamsLead cost/weight/performance analysis and trade-off discussions/resolutionPrepare and present project gateway reviews to managementPropose, lead, and manage research projects with universities or supplier partners to develop new system design concepts and technologiesQualifications

MS or PhD in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or related fieldExperienced in coordinating vehicle instrumentation and troubleshootingStrong leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.Working knowledge of core systems engineering tools (P-diagrams, FMEA, DVP&R), requirements development and cascade process.Proficient in 1D modeling tools such as GT SuiteExperience with 3D modeling/CFD tools such as StarCCM or Preon LabExperience with fluid experimentation and measurement technique such as anemometry, laser sheet or particle imageryExperience with fluid-relevant design and failure analysis techniques: tribology, composition analysisPrevious experience of leading large project teams and cross functional groupsGood understanding of electrified propulsion system architectures and vehicle attribute trade-offs.Good understanding and experience with development of controls and calibration strategies for vehicle thermal or energy management.Working knowledge of system simulations, vehicle testing, and validation.Ability to summarize and communicate project updates/issues to managementProficient in the use of Microsoft Office or G-Suite tools for documentation and presentationExperience using Confluence, Polarion, Jira, Asana, and other project management tools
