About the company:

We're Twelve, the carbon transformation company—a new kind of chemical company that makes things from air, not oil. Our breakthrough technology eliminates emissions by transforming CO2 into critical materials, products and fuels.
When it comes to addressing climate change, carbon isn’t our nemesis. To the contrary, we see carbon as the element of change. Carbon isn’t just the building block of life, it’s the building block of the chemicals, materials and fuels that make up our modern world and power innovation. From the spring in our running shoes to our favorite electronics, to building materials, electric car parts and fuels, carbon makes it possible. The problem is we get this carbon today from fossil fuels in the form of petrochemicals, which creates CO2 emissions and accelerates climate change.
Carbon transformation fundamentally changes this paradigm by sourcing carbon from CO2 instead of fossil fuels. By replacing the fossil carbon in critical chemicals with renewable, recycled carbon from CO2, we can eliminate emissions from thousands of essential products and set a new standard for how things get made in the climate era.

Twelve is pioneering a new industrial era with carbon transformation. We use electrochemistry to turn CO2 into critical products—fuels, chemicals, and materials—that today rely on fossil fuels. Our mission: to fundamentally change how the world makes its essential goods by transforming CO2 from a liability into a resource, building resilient, fossil-free supply chains, and advancing next-generation industry.

We would like this to be your dream job. Many of us start in engineering work, hoping to get to invent things and build them in a creative environment, surrounded by people who are doing the same. While many careers turn into an endless slog of specifications and detail optimization, we are doing that inventive work of our dreams and that work is especially rewarding because it is work that the world needs.

This position is on a small team that primarily supports our test stations. These stations (at multiple scales) are custom devices managing gas, liquid, temperature, and current for our electrochemical cells. Modification of test equipment to suit a particular scientific purpose is a normal part of our operation. In this position, you will work with electrochemists, materials engineers, operations staff, and your fellow equipment/mechanical engineers to determine the best path forward to reach a particular goal. Then, you’ll execute projects that vary from a few days of sourcing and assembly to projects that require months of design, work with multiple vendors and outside fabricators, and install coordination with internal partners. We aim to work proportionally and elegantly to build the right tool for the job of the moment.

What you will do:

  • Design and build equipment to support the development of our electrolyzer technology

  • Lead projects of different sizes based on tactical needs of the moment

  • Learn and teach and share constantly

  • Assist with service, maintenance, and troubleshooting for existing equipment

  • Identify opportunities and provide technical input to guide strategic decisions

  • Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to do things that have never been done before

Who you are:

  • The ability to work safely and take responsibility for the safety of others in an environment with multiple hazard types

  • Some kind of engineer with substantial hardware experience in multiple arenas

  • You have breadth and depth in your understanding of mechanical systems, including several of the following: pumps, fluids, high pressure gasses, fixturing, temperature control, high current switching, valves, seals, motion control, hydraulics or pneumatics, flow measurement and control, metrology

  • Experience with designing and troubleshooting electromechanical systems

  • Experience with sensor specification, selection, and integration

  • Familiarity with a broad range of fabrication methods and significant hands-on experience and comfort in some methods. (we have a shop and you should use it)

  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to drive consensus and understanding across a broad range of audiences.

  • Comfort with experimental work and interpreting data

Twelve Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Paid sick days and vacation

  • Competitive salary and equity compensation commensurate with experience

  • Diverse and inclusive work environment
