About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

TE Magnetics is the high temperature superconducing (HTS) technology division of Tokamak Energy. Born from our mission to deliver fusion energy, we have developed world-leading HTS technology, protected by more than 250 patents and supported by exceptional scientific, engineering, and commercial expertise.

HTS is a transformative technology for a wide range of industries, enabling magnet and power distribution systems that are more powerful, lighter, compact, and highly efficient—transforming industries, creating new opportunities, and accelerating innovation.

TE Magnetics, which is already generating multi-million-pound revenues, is developing robust, high-quality HTS solutions across fast-growing markets including fusion, power systems, analytical science, propulsion, and defence. We are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.

Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is headquartered in Oxfordshire, with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Today, we employ over 300 people and have secured more than £280 million in investment.

Work on power systems that don’t yet exist

At Tokamak Energy, we’re redefining how power is generated, controlled, and delivered using high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology.

Within our TE Magnetics division, we’re moving beyond traditional high-voltage approaches—developing ultra-high current, low-voltage power architectures that are lighter, more efficient, and fundamentally different from anything in today’s power systems.

We’re now hiring a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to play a key role in our SuperDC programme—a first-of-a-kind initiative focused on next-generation power conversion.

This is a hands-on, technically deep role for someone who wants to own a problem end-to-end and turn bold ideas into working hardware.

What you’ll be doing

  • Take ownership of power conversion subsystems from concept through to demonstrator
  • Design and develop advanced power electronics systems (DC-DC converters, multi-stage architectures, gate drive systems)
  • Build and run high-power experimental test programmes
  • Apply first-principles engineering to solve novel challenges
  • Collaborate across HTS, systems, controls, and mechanical engineering teams
  • Translate experimental learnings into robust, real-world solutions

Why this role is different

  • Work on first-of-a-kind systems, not incremental improvements
  • Own a critical subsystem, not just a small part of a large team
  • Operate in a high-autonomy environment where engineers drive decisions
  • Help shape the future of fusion and next-generation power systems

Requirements

  • Strong experience in power electronics design, development, and testing
  • Expertise in power conversion (e.g. converters, PSU design, control, switching technologies)
  • Proven ability to work independently and own technical delivery
  • Background in industrial or high-power environments (not purely academic)
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, experimental setting
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work across disciplines and stakeholders

We’re especially interested in experience across:
DC-DC converters | multi-stage converters | gate drive systems | high-power testing | SiC/GaN technologies | converter topologies

Benefits

  • Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split. Part time working or job share options will be reviewed on an individual basis.
  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays and discretionary 3 festive days to be used between Christmas and the New Year)
  • Company pension scheme
  • Eligible for company share option scheme
  • Company bonus scheme, discretionary, dependant on performance
  • A range of financial benefits including death in service and critical illness cover
  • Cycle to work scheme
