Responsibilities:

  • Join the Cell Engineering team, developing next-generation battery technology for Rivian’s products 
  • Bring expertise in mechanical designs of specialized equipment and overall system for cathode active material (CAM) production 
  • Taking ownership of all mechanical design aspects of pilot and production lines while working cross functionally with all engineering disciplines to build and optimize the process 
  • Own equipment mechanical specifications and work directly with vendors to ensure standards are followed 
  • Own process equipment development, performance, and failures within the CAM Manufacturing Engineering team and support discipline strategy for pilot and production 
  • Work alongside entire CAM Manufacturing Engineering team and own mechanical discipline outcome of all phases of detailed engineering drawings during project life-cycle with integrators, specialty equipment vendors, and factory design 
  • Work with internal and external equipment suppliers to resolve technical problems that would significantly affect product quality, manufacturing operability, equipment performance, project cost and schedule 
  • Act as the primary point of contact for mechanical engineering for CAM Manufacturing Engineering team 
  • Prepare and communicate the project status and escalation of critical issues   

 Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or relevant degrees with 5+ years of hands-on work experience in lithium-ion battery, ceramic materials, or chemical industry 
  • Strong knowledge and experience in performing engineering designs and reviews of processing equipment, P&IDs, specialty equipment fabrication drawings, engineering drawings of vessels and other equipment for fabrication 
  • Deep understanding of equipment design specifications and calculations such as stress analysis, materials of construction, mechanical assembly procedures and practices, pressure vessel and piping (ASME) codes, design temperatures and pressures, fabrication and welding procedures and practices, NDE testing, and metallurgy types, corrosion tolerances, inspection practices 
  • Experience with various rotating equipment designs including pumps, compressors, seal, gear boxes, mixers, including hand-on experience extending to maintenance and operational best practices 
  • Strong first-principles understanding of heat transfer, stress strain, materials, fluids, and thermodynamics 
  • Experience with drawings, P&ID for compliance with established code, standards and specifications, equipment procurement, installation, and processing equipment integration 
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to communicate with vendors and other parts of the company 
  • Knowledgeable in high and low volume manufacturing (e.g., proto-typing, OEE, equipment selection, DFM, MES, CAD) 
  • Strong experience in pilot- or mass production-scale with proven ability to scale equipment and production line designs from pilot to high volume. 
  • Strong team orientation and cross functional attitude. 
  • Experience with 2D AutoCAD is required; experience with 3D models and other software is a plus 
  • Experience in equipment design risk analyses practices and root cause failure investigations, including Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) to define risks 
  • Expertise in industrial drying process, powder transportation, kilns or furnaces, design of process equipment handling liquid acids, milling, mixing will be a plus 
  • Experience working as a member of a team across several cross functional disciplines, including product design, product quality, construction, operations, supply chain, controls, electrical engineering, external vendors etc.  
  • Willing to travel, both domestic and international up to 30%
