About the company:

The world needs a clean and reliable source of base-load energy to develop sustainably into the future. That’s what Tokamak Energy is striving to achieve.

Tokamak Energy is a private company accelerating the development of fusion power.

Fusion – the energy source that powers the sun – is globally accepted as the best way to generate plentiful, safe, secure and clean energy. The tokamak is the most heavily researched and best understood of all the different paths to fusion.

It is now acknowledged that the spherical tokamak design offers the smallest and most cost-effective solution. This is our solution. Yet there are many complex engineering challenges that need to be overcome for demonstration and commercialisation of this technology.

Our team of world-class fusion scientists and magnet engineers is tackling these challenges to develop efficient and affordable fusion power. Our unique approach is centred on rapid innovation using the latest materials and technology – but building on decades of scientific research and experience. This strategy gives us – and the world – a faster way to fusion.

Once fusion electricity is achieved, our scalable technology could be rolled out across the world as a solution to one of humanity’s greatest challenges: clean and sustainable energy for all.

Working arrangements

Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split.

Part time working or job share options will be reviewed on an individual basis.

Overview

The Magnet Business Unit is a new structure within Tokamak Energy. We want to usher in the HTS era. This is a technical role within the MBU focused on developing and implementing instrumentation and data-acquisition systems to control and monitor a range of cryogenic systems with HTS magnets.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead development of instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems to monitor and control HTS magnets and their associated cryogenic environment.
  • Working with the wider team to design coil testing facilities to ensure prototype magnets can be fully characterised and that we meet the project requirements.
  • Take ownership of HTS magnet and cryostat control systems, from early designs to manufacturing, commissioning of both software and hardware, to handing off to an end user.
  • Create modelling, data acquisition, or data analysis software as required.
  • Design electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and PCBs as required.
  • Specify software requirements and work with external contractors to develop and test software, focusing on on-time delivery of well-tested code.
  • Working with external collaborators as required to develop, test or purchase measurement electronics, sensors and associated instrumentation.
  • Lead safety analysis and safety case preparation for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Interpreting test results and producing clear written reports. Prepare technical reports and specifications.
  • Liaise with project and program managers, as well as external customers, as needed.
  • Mentor and supervise junior engineers or technicians.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering or physics-based discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience of specifying, developing and contributing to development of complex data acquisition and control software/hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience of designing electrical schematics and printed circuit boards
  • Experience of working with cryogenics, superconducting magnets or other high magnetic field environments.
  • Demonstrated experience of training or mentoring junior engineers or technicians.
  • Experience in working with National Instruments PXI, cRIO or other real-time systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience of working with FPGAs or embedded systems running Linux is desirable.
  • Experience in software programming in any language, ideally C/C++ or LabVIEW.
  • Experience of working with optical instrumentation is desirable.
  • Willingness to work 'hands on' in a laboratory setting
  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation, and commitment to working to defined timescales.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team of engineers, physicists, designers, and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.

Benefits

  • Salary dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset
  • 28 days (inclusive of festive break) holiday plus bank holidays
