The SPARC Radiation Protection Team is responsible for the radiological safety of employees, the public, the environment, and property. We are looking for a Senior Health Physicist (Sr. HP) with broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of a comprehensive Radiation Safety program. The Sr. HP performs advanced health physics, or health physics oversight work in support of the SPARC device design, licensing, and facility operation. This individual will be responsible for creating and/or managing portions of the radiation protection program for SPARC.

This team member will:

  • Provide high level guidance, technical assistance, and training in health physics, and radiation detection, measurement, and protection
  • Support the licensing of SPARC with the Massachusetts RCP
  • Serve as the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer for the SPARC facility, assuming RSO responsibilities when the RSO is unavailable.
  • Prepare and/or update radiation protection procedures, safety standards, and emergency plans
  • Ensure compliance with CFS, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Responsible for maintaining radiation protection, laboratory, and detection equipment and establishing and overseeing related programs
  • Day to day management of Radiation Dosimetry and Bioassay Programs
  • Manage the Environmental Monitoring Program, performing and/or reviewing radiological surveys and environmental monitoring
  • Develop and Manage Radiation Work Permit Program: Reviews all work permits, conducts hazard assessments and audits, makes recommendations to the Radiation Safety Officer on permitting actions and provides training and support to radiation workers. Delegates to others as appropriate. Responsible for record keeping and ensuring the work permitting process progresses in a timely manner. 
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety trainings. Develop supplemental material in support of these trainings, including written training materials, manuals, guidance documents, instruction sets, forms, and postings.
  • Support broader CFS Radiation Protection team as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Management of technical staff. Works across multiple teams in a matrixed organization.
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in physical science, engineering, or biological science.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in health physics including at least 3 years in applied health physics with responsibility for a major program in radiological health
  • Experience working under and applying radiation regulations, specifically 105 CMR 120/10 CFR 30 (or equivalent)
  • Experience applying a variety of radiation monitoring techniques to different situations
  • Experience writing procedures, work plans, or technical documents
  • Preferred:
  • Experience with gram quantities of tritium (either use or oversight)
  • Experience working under a broad scope license
  • Experience with radiation facility lifecycle - design, licensing, operation, and decommissioning. 
  • CHP (Certified Health Physicist) desired but not required.
  • Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Knowledge of radiation control, radiological health, environmental laws and regulations, and radiation safety practices and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community as well as foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Working with appropriate PPE in the presence of hazards such an exposure to heat, cold, noise, and strong magnets.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call.
