We’re looking for a senior functional safety engineer with a strong understanding of engineering principles, experience with the analysis of safety critical systems, and desire to lead. In this role, you’ll work with multidisciplinary engineering teams to shape the product and lead the assessment of innovative hardware and software for autonomous rail. You’ll lead the effort for functional safety compliance with regulators and work closely with engineers and test staff to verify and validate systems.

Responsibilities

  • Work with cross functional teams on the strategy, development, implementation, testing, and approval of safety critical systems
  • Define and derive safety-related requirements for on board electronics, braking, and train control systems
  • Participate in internal design reviews and ensure projects in development will meet safety requirements and that verification and validation plans are in place
  • Lead and perform hazard and risk analysis of specific subsystems
  • Author safety assessments and safety plans in accordance with applicable regulations
  • Lead and manage regulatory application projects
  • Communicate and present safety narrative to regulators

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in functional safety field
  • Experience with IEC 61508, IEC 62278, IEC 62289, EN 5102x, ISO 26262 or related IEC 61508 derived functional safety standard
  • Experience applying functional safety processes to off-the-shelf and custom-designed electronic systems, software systems, and concepts of operation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with new product introduction
  • Experience managing a schedule, risks, and execution, of a complex project involving multiple people
  • Experience with computer-based train control systems
  • Experience with U.S. railway regulations including 49 CFR 236 Subpart H, 236 Subpart I, and 229
  • Experience with international standards and regulations

Final salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s final level. Also, this range represents base salary only and does not include equity or benefits, if applicable.

$150,000/year to $215,000/year + equity + benefits
