About the role….

We are looking for a dynamic and proactive Bioinformatics Scientist with a demonstrated track record to join our fast-growing team at Inari Ghent. The Bioinformatics Scientist will be responsible for designing, implementing, executing, and coordinating computational analysis. The incumbent will contribute to experimental design, interpret, and analyze data produced in various projects, draw conclusions, and make recommendations to the teams. She/he will also contribute to the development of new scientific project proposals in his or her area of expertise. She/he will be able to clearly communicate scientific results to different audiences and will be responsible for managing certain third-party collaborations.

The right candidate must be able to take initiative, be efficient and well organized to deliver high quality results on time. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role as part of an interdisciplinary team. The incumbent must enjoy a “start-up” atmosphere and be able to take responsibility, show good judgment and be willing to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to achieve goals and deliverables. This position will be located in our growing team in Ghent, Belgium. Key Responsibilities:

  • The Bioinformatics Scientist will be responsible for designing, implementation, execution, and coordination of computational projects
  • Assist with the new hire process for incoming personnel
  • Train and instruct other staff members to use specific tools and pipelines when needed.
  • Work with Research Assistants and other Scientists to execute scientific experiments related to one or more projects
  • Manage third party collaborations
  • Scout for new technologies and partners
  • Maintain detailed, accurate and comprehensible records of all experiments and results
  • Analyze and interpret data, draw conclusions and make recommendations
  • (co-)Develop new scientific project proposals
  • Communicate results in written and oral presentations

Required Skills/Experience:

  • PhD or Master with at least 5 years of experience in Computational Biology/Biotechnology or similar field is required
  • At least 3 years of experience in industry and/or post-doctoral experience
  • Demonstrated scientific leadership to independently design, implement, coordinate and drive successful outcomes in scientific projects
  • Strong record of independent research supported by peer-reviewed publications and/or patents
  • Solid expertise with multi-omic data analysis including WGS, transcriptomics and single cell RNA-Seq
  • Strong expertise in R or Python. Knowledge of additional programming languages (Julia, …) is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills especially adapted to the needs of a non-computational target audience and cross functional team
  • Ability to thrive and deliver results on goals in a fast-paced, dynamic and highly multi-tasking environment
  • Proactive, highly motivated, and strong team player with a high degree of independence
  • Demonstrated creative, innovative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Team player

Additional Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Expert in quantitative genetics (GWAS, QTL)
  • Deep knowledge of statistics (experiment design, mixed model, statistical data analysis, …)
  • Experience with people management
  • Knowledge and experience of plant biology, plant biotechnology and genome editing technologies
