Position: Research Associate – Field Technology Development; Location:  Remote in the Midwest, Corn belt states preferred 

The Field Measurement Team tests, develops, and implements new or existing field methodologies and technologies in partnerships with R&D, Product Development, and Commercial Agronomy to support the advancement and sale of the Pivot Bio pipeline of products.  As part of this team, the Research Associate will be the boots on the ground to execute scientific protocols, collect samples and data, test and assess new technologies, and support implementation, ensuring high quality experiments are completed in a safe, timely, and efficient manner.  This may include working with imaging, sensors, software systems, analytical devices, aerial drones, ground robotics, and environmental sampling (soil, air, water, plants, microbes) under various conditions and multiple locations. This position may also support additional projects/duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Execution of scientific protocols at field trial sites
  • Organizing, planning, and leading time critical travel to field sites for site QC and/or data collection
  • Collection and organization of high quality and accurate field/environmental samples (soil, air, water, plant, microbial)
  • Collection and organization of high quality and accurate data generated from technological/analytical devices
  • Understanding thresholds for quality data and mitigation of quality issues on site 
  • Prompt and accurate delivery of field samples/data 
  • Safe and efficient operation of technological devices in field environments
  • Proper use and care of hardware and supplies
  • Troubleshooting and adapting to unforeseen challenges/technical problems in the field Receiving and maintaining proper licensing, training, and documentation to obtain/maintain certifications for technology usage in multiple states (e.g. UAV operations) as needed
  • Security and safety of yourself, colleagues, and Pivot Bio assets
  • Ability to travel >50% of the time during the summer field months

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.S. with 2-4 years of relevant work experience or M.S. with 1 year experience in an agricultural and/or environmental discipline 
  • Familiarity with technologies/sensors/measurement devices for crop/environmental assessments
  • Experience and expertise in field trial sampling, data collection, and organization
  • High level of interest in testing new methodologies and technologies in field environments
  • Good understanding of agronomy/crop physiology/microbiology  
  • High desire to organize work plans, execute efficiently, and independently
  • Strong communication skills 
  • Ability to work as part of a team that is remotely distributed
  • Part 107 UAV license or willingness to obtain license if requested
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, i.e., heat, humidity, rain, cold, etc. for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces
  • Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for long periods of time
  • Seasonally the workday may be expanded to allow for tasks to be completed
  • Must be able to repetitively lift to 55 lbs.
