The RT Level 3 Engineer at Commonwealth Fusion Systems will play a crucial role in developing and overseeing radiographic testing (RT) on the production floor, at external vendor sites, as well as during the construction of the SPARC project.

This position requires a strong understanding of both the physics and practical application of radiography. A firm understanding and previous use of industry codes, specifications, best industry practices, and ability to review and implement industry research will be necessary in order to succeed in this position.

This team member will:

  • Oversee all technical aspects and performance of RT inspections on the production floor, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards
  • Lead the development of automated image processing tools to evaluate radiographic images for compliance with CFS quality requirements
  • Develop, review, and maintain RT procedures and adapt them to meet the specific needs of the SPARC project
  • Work with the mechanical engineering team to develop tools to improve current RT processes and design custom in-house system solutions for new inspection needs
  • Evaluate the knowledge level of the NDT technicians and determine the knowledge gaps and develop and manage training programs for NDT technicians in radiographic testing techniques, ensuring high skill levels and understanding
  • Work with the Engineering teams to review and recommend inspection requirements
  • Perform regular audits of RT processes for compliance with regulatory and company standards
  • Provide support and guidance to NDT technicians, resolving technical questions and issues
  • Report on inspection results, trends, and process improvements
  • Oversee RT needs at vendor locations, ensuring consistency and quality of external inspections
  • Supervise RT activities during the construction phase of the SPARC project, coordinating with project managers and construction teams
  • Collaborate with the Senior NDT Level 3 Engineer to optimize inspection strategies and ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis and support the development of Corrective Actions for non-conformances
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of RT equipment. If required, lead the development and maintenance of company NDT certification
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other related technical field
  • ASNT, NAS410, or ISO 9712 Level III Certification in RT
  • Additional NDT certifications in ET, UT, and/or PT are preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in NDT, with a focus on radiographic testing
  • Experience in radiographic operations of both thin wall and heavy wall structures, welds, and brazing/soldering
  • Proficient in using and learning digital RT image evaluation software
  • Extensive experience in Digital Radiography and Computed Tomography
  • Experience with software such as Volume Graphics, aRTist or CIVA
  • Experience as Radiation Safety Officer 
  • Extensive knowledge of NDE methods, with a heavy concentration in RT
  • Analyze 2D and 3D image data and report quantitative results
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME Section V, ASTM E1742, ASTM E747, etc.
  • Procedure development and training
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in Digital Radiography and Computed Tomography
  • Experience with software such as Volume Graphics, aRTist or CIVA
  • Experience as Radiation Safety Officer 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting, for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenicsWillingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call or long hours
