About the company:

C1 develops new, climate-friendly chemical production processes by rethinking chemical reactions from the atomic level all the way up to production scale.

The first innovation to spin out of our quantum-chemistry platform is a novel, proprietary methanol catalysis. This groundbreaking technology disrupts a century old chemical production process and enables us to unlock non-fossil feedstocks for the production of green methanol.

Green methanol will play a pivotal role in the defossilization of the carbon-based chemical industry and is poised to become the alternative fuel of choice for net-zero shipping. The market for green methanol is expected to grow to appr. $200 billion per year by 2050. The resulting CO2 saving potential of green methanol is several gigatons per year (several percentage points of current global CO2 emissions).

Our aim is to realize as much of that potential as fast as possible.

Your mission

If you want your simulations to drive real-world decisions—not just nice plots—this role is for you. You’ll help scale green methanol from early scale-up work to industrial application, turning plant data and rigorous models into engineering and commercial clarity.

Why this role is worth your time

  • Real impact: Your models inform design choices, cost outlook, and scale-up investments.
  • Real data validation: Compare models against actual plant operations.
  • Modern workflow: Steady-state + dynamic modeling, Python/MATLAB automation, version control.
  • High ownership: Fast learning curve, close collaboration across R&D, operations, engineering, and commercial.

Build, validate, and run simulation models that become the quantitative backbone for process design and scale-up. You’ll keep modeling assumptions and thermodynamics consistent, deliver trustworthy outputs, and make complex system behavior actionable for cross-functional teams.

What you’ll do

  • Develop, validate, and maintain steady-state and dynamic process simulation models
  • Define and maintain a consistent modeling basis (thermo packages, assumptions, data)
  • Generate mass & energy balances and simulation inputs for equipment sizing and process design
  • Provide reliable outputs for cost estimation and commercial evaluations
  • Run optimizations, sensitivity studies, and scenario analyses
  • Support troubleshooting and debottlenecking via plant data ↔ model comparisons
  • Use Python and/or MATLAB for data processing, automation, and reporting (incl. AI/agentic coding when useful)
  • Maintain clear documentation and version control for models and results

Your profile

What you bring

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with at least one simulator: Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, gPROMS, or similar dynamic modeling software
  • Proven ability to build and maintain steady-state models (dynamic is a plus)
  • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, phase behavior, and unit operations
  • Python and/or MATLAB for data workflows, automation, reporting, visualization
  • Experience with optimization, sensitivity, and scenario work
  • Clear communication and collaboration across engineering, R&D, operations, and commercial
  • Structured work style with emphasis on documentation, traceability, and version control

Nice to have

  • Pilot-plant experience
  • Git-based workflows, reproducible modeling setups, light CI/automation
  • Exposure to Techno Economic Modeling / cost engineering interfaces
