ICON is looking to add a Process and Automation Engineer to the Off-Planet Systems team. This person will be responsible for planning, designing, testing and building automation systems that support novel processes for extraterrestrial environments. This will include developing and testing hardware for both laboratory and flight applications and advising and aiding in process development and testing. The systems this person will develop need to be designed for extreme environments with harsh, abrasive, and high temperature processes. This will require an individual with the flexibility to successfully complete a wide range of tasks ranging from targeted, such developing an improving nozzle geometry, to system level such as designing and then testing an end effector on a robot.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the process and mechanical teams to define and update system requirements for hardware and test cells.
  • Advise the process and mechanical teams on improving both hardware and process parameters from the perspective of automation efficiency
  • Design, build and test custom hardware for improving process automation or testing new automation concepts
  • Design, build and utilize custom process automation test cells using a mix of off the shelf and custom hardware.
  • Spec off the shelf hardware that can serve an analogues for flight systems
  • Improve the design of systems to be flight ready.
  • Work with the software team to plan and execute testing of custom process hardware on automated systems.
  • Take responsibility for interpreting test results to refine and improve automation hardware

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or similar discipline
  • 5+ years of hands on automation experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate across multiple disciplines with internal and external customers
  • Strong experience with mechanical design
  • Skilled Solidworks user
  • Hands on testing experience
  • Has experience developing hardware around a specific process.
  • Experience developing mechanisms
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong sense of ownership

 

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • 10+ years of hand on automation experience
  • Experience with data acquisition and control system design (LabView, Dewesoft, PLCs, or other)
  • Experience with high power laser systems
  • Experience in formal systems engineering: requirements development, implementation, verification, system integration, qualification and release
  • Experience in spacecraft systems design and qualifying hardware for spaceflight
  • Experience coordinating and executing spacecraft or robotic systems tests in TVAC environments.
