To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role.

The SPARC tokamak will have a large pulsed power system to operate the superconducting magnets, requiring ~300 megawatts of power at a few kilovolts and tens of kiloamps for up to 30 seconds. We're looking for an early-/mid-career engineer with experience or interest in large-scale power supplies to help with the design, procurement, commissioning, and operation of our magnet power supplies.

CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.

At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.

This team member will:

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and physicists to outline the design and specification of the SPARC magnet power supplies
  • Assist simulation and modeling efforts to help evaluate system requirements and support operational goals
  • Interface with vendors to ensure that they can deliver power supplies that meet SPARC requirements
  • Participate in the planning for commissioning and integration of the SPARC Pulsed Power Electrical System
  • Attend and participate in meetings where design progress is discussed, iterated, and updated
  • The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with power systems of at least the class: ~1 kV, ~10 kA, ~10 s (e.g., thyristor rectifiers used as power supplies for smelters, electromagnets, electrochemical processing, traction, etc.) preferred
  • Familiarity in applying IEEE standards to design solutions preferred
  • Familiarity with computer-based analysis of electrical systems preferred
  • A professional engineer license is preferred, but not required preferred
  • Experience with industry standard electrical design tools preferred
  • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • An emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
  • A drive towards commercially viable solutions
  • Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Ability to sit and/or type for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and/or work required nights/weekends/on-call
