About the company:

We're on a mission to make a big green dent in the universe by building a truly sustainable energy system globally.

That means making power greener, smarter, and more affordable for everyone.

We put customers at the heart of everything we do: with always-fair prices, transparency and outrageous customer service.

We drive system change: with transformative tech to make renewable energy the norm and end global reliance on fossil fuels.

Octopus Energy Group is made up of 10 businesses spanning 6 countries across 3 continents, including: Octopus Energy Retail, Kraken Technologies, Octopus Energy Generation, Kraken Flex, Octopus Electric Vehicles, and the Octopus Centre for Net Zero. More on OEG @ octopusenergy.group

Help us make a big green dent in the universe. We're on a mission to drive the global renewable energy revolution, and we need loads more people to help us make our vision a reality.

As part of the wider Octopus Energy group, Octopus Energy Generation sources, invests in and operates a range of clean energy investments ranging from utility-scale renewable energy assets to other areas of the energy transition including hydrogen and other e-fuels, electric vehicles and heat pumps. We are expanding our team as we continue to scale our £5B investment base.

The OEGen Energy Transition Team focuses on investing into the newer frontiers of the energy transition beyond core renewables such as wind and solar. Our target sectors include storage, distributed energy solutions (solar, batteries, heat pumps, EV charging), grid infrastructure, hydrogen, emissions capture and other e-fuels (SAF, ammonia, e-methanol).

This starts with making platform investments. We are backing small businesses to grow with our capital and expertise. These businesses will then provide a pipeline of infrastructure assets that we will expect to invest in. We are flexible in our structuring and acquire equity stakes from minorities to 100% in platform businesses, enter into joint ventures and development service agreements. We invest from very early-stage/greenfield pipelines to mature companies.

We are currently a team of 6 people dedicated (Harry Manisty, Effie Wang, Tom McCarty, Bilal Ahmed, Richard Draper and Takuto Kushi) to the energy transition investment strategy, but with more from the 100+ OEGen team supporting.

We love what we do, working with each other, and the impact we are having on the planet and communities. We have a culture of empowerment, no politics and a flat hierarchy. We work and socialise closely with other teams at OEGEN which has a strong “one team, one dream” vibe.

The primary focus for this role is on developing and maintaining excellent relationships with our growing portfolio of Energy Transition platform companies. We intend to be a true partner to these talented management teams, supporting them to achieve growth.

We strongly encourage applications from a variety of candidates - we believe that different experiences result in increased ideas, collaboration and success. The first stage of the process will include a run through of our company culture, as well as a conversation around what is important for you in your next role.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.

What you'll do

  • You will be coordinating and tracking actions and choices to ensure effective management of our opportunities.
  • You will be liaising with specialists across Octopus Energy and our network of partners to bring wider knowledge to bear.
  • You’ll work closely with the Portfolio management specialists in our renewable energy platform team (including the director leading that team, Barney Rhys-Jones) to adopt common practices and processes and share learnings.
  • You will be collating and reviewing the information needed to assess performance and progress and decide where to focus.
  • You will be assessing, negotiating, and making recommendations on key contractual, and operational points in order to support our purpose to make a big impact in decarbonising the energy system.
  • You will support the investment team in assessing and preparing to manage all new investments.
  • After the initial investment you will in many cases be expected to take the lead on any follow-on investments into the platforms and the infrastructure investments.
  • In time, you may have the opportunity to support raising project finance against the infrastructure assets and ultimately sales processes when the assets are sold by our funds.
  • The role therefore provides an opportunity to develop extensive professional investment skills alongside portfolio management.
  • What you'll need

  • Commercial thinking: A good working understanding of contracts & project finance.
  • Good communication skills: listening & understanding; making complex issues digestible.
  • To be a self-starter: there’s no shortage of things to do and opportunities to shine, you don’t hesitate to identify what is important and make it happen. There will be plenty of support from the team but you will own it.
  • Organisation and delivery focused skills: you are highly organised, skilled in prioritisation, and willing to take ownership of getting actions closed and decisions taken.
  • You speak languages: we’re expected to back platform businesses in Europe and beyond
  • Experience in energy projects, or energy project development and permitting would be beneficial!
  • Great analytical and modelling skills would be beneficial
  • Experience of building Sharepoint or similar systems would be beneficial
  • Experience of Microsoft Applications beneficial
  • Why else you'll love it here

  • Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
