ICON is seeking a Manager of Field Engineering to oversee the team responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining our 3D printers in the field. In this role, you’ll drive daily tactical planning for machine maintenance, including issue resolution, resource allocation, and preventive maintenance execution. This is a field service role based out of our Austin, TX campus, with full-time travel to active construction sites across the U.S. and internationally. This role will report to the Senior Director of Operations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and lead a high-performing field support team including hiring, training and day-to-day management. 
  • Manage the response process for operator-submitted tickets and coordinate across departments to resolve hardware, data, and printer communication issues.
  • Take full ownership of printer uptime, maintenance tracking, and performance reporting.
  • Oversee servicing operations at multiple construction project sites, manage priorities, and lead small teams of technicians and engineers in the field.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of repair tools and replacement parts.
  • Schedule field service technicians for printer maintenance and support tasks.
  • Develop onboarding materials and technical training content for new hires.
  • Provide updates on machine performance and tie progress to quarterly Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).
  • Conduct regular cross-functional meetings to align on machine troubleshooting and status updates.
  • Execute and provide continuous improvement feedback to predictive/preventive programs for 3D printing systems.
  • Support predictive/preventive Maintenance development with Reliability, Testing, and Data Intelligence and Systems Architecture teams
  • Travel up to 100% of the time to ICON’s construction project sites.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field and 2+ years of relevant experience; OR Associate’s degree in a technical field and 4+ years of relevant experience; OR 8+ years of experience in a technical environment.
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership role with proven experience leading small and distributed technical teams.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial-scale production machinery, sensors, and data systems.
  • Proficiency with standard diagnostic tools such as multimeters, calipers, torque wrenches, flow meters, and infrared thermometers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of part fabrication processes including machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, laser cutting, etching, injection molding, 3D printing, and hydroforming.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience coordinating technical operations and collaborating across departments.
  • Strong ability to communicate data insights clearly and effectively.
  • Familiarity with analyzing machine event logs to inform maintenance or performance decisions.
  • Robust electromechanical and software troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Comfortable making strategic decisions under pressure in fast-paced environments.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely and regularly.
  • Comfortable working in a range of outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), sun, rain, mud, and areas with limited infrastructure (e.g., no electricity).
  • Comfortable standing and moving on your feet for most of the workday, as well as climbing ladders and carrying material buckets.
  • Willingness to travel outside of Austin, TX, for extended periods.
  • Flexible availability to work nights, weekends, and support an on-call schedule as needed.
  • Ability to work in Austin, TX and surrounding areas (up to 50 miles).
