About the company:

Radiant is a clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Internship - Nuclear Engineer – Radiation Transport and Shielding

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Engineer Intern for Summer 2025. Under the Kaleidos Demonstration Unit engineering team, you will provide modeling and simulation support to the nuclear analysis toolbox to investigate nuclear-related design parameters and physics-based assumptions.  You will develop new reactor shielding and physics models, own your work, and defend your final project to other nuclear engineers and the broader company. You’ll get mentorship and report to the Lead Nuclear Engineer, learn from cross-functional teammates, and have a tangible impact on improving Kaleidos’ fuel performance assessments that will enable Kaleidos’ successful entrance into the market.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assess the validity and appropriateness of shielding analysis models, benchmarking critical figures of merit against other internal tooling.
  • Support the development of lower order shielding analysis models to develop rapid shielding design solutions.
  • Support the development of uncertainty propagation methodology and its execution on the Kaleidos Demonstration Unit.
  • Assess open items and uncertainties upon completion of your task(s).
  • Present a final project review at the end of internship to engineers and leadership.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing BS in nuclear engineering, physics, or related discipline.
  • At least 1 year of experience with nuclear engineering tools, such as radiation transport (e.g., MCNP, OpenMC, Serpent), thermal fluids (e.g., AGREE, PRONGHORN, CFD), or fuel performance (e.g., BISON, MELCOR).
  • Ability to seek out resources and proactively ask questions to finish projects through completion effectively, accurately, and timely.
  • Genuinely excited for our mission to rapidly deploy nuclear microreactors to remote locations requiring abundant, clean energy.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a M.S./Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, physics, or related discipline.
  • A high level of independence in solving challenging engineering tasks is preferred.
  • Hands on project examples outside of the classroom such as extracurricular projects, clubs, research, lab work or personal projects.
  • Prior internship experience helpful but not required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment with a proactive and collaborative attitude.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to commit to 10-12 consecutive weeks in Summer 2025.
